"MOSCOW—In an escalation of the war in Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin raised the threat of a nuclear response in the conflict and ordered reservists to mobilize, as Moscow seeks to buttress its army’s flagging manpower and regain the offensive following stinging losses on the battlefield.
“Russia will use all the instruments at its disposal to counter a threat against its territorial integrity—this is not a bluff,” Mr. Putin said in a national address that blamed the West for the conflict in Ukraine, where he said his troops were facing the best of Western troops and weapons.
The speech is the clearest sign yet that seven months into the biggest conflict in Europe since World War II, Russia is unable to counter Ukraine and the West, which has largely united in the face of the Russian invasion."
I have no love for either side. Putin is a majorly fuked up human being. The people of Russia need to end him. Ukraine could be OK but they screw the pooch every time.

Looks like they are expecting to call up about 300,000 men, or 1% of the reserve.
Does anyone have a source for 300k being 1% of the reserves? Wiki says Russia has 2 million reserves, which would make this 15% of the reserves.
How deep he's going into the reserves likely determines how long Russia can stay in the fight, and how much domestic resistance mobilization creates as well as the quality of soldier he's getting (how old and how long since they served).
MSN is a news aggregator. The article in the msn link is an opinion piece from Forbes that I happen to agree with. No kidding. In my book you can repeat Russian propaganda all you want. :) Even w/o quoting and links to the source.

Thousands of conscription-age Russian men appeared to be attempting to flee the country Wednesday as others planned how to avoid being sent to the front after President Vladimir Putin declared a partial military mobilization for the war in Ukraine.

I was wondering how that was going to go down in the motherland.

BELGRADE, Serbia (AP) — Large numbers of Russians rushed to book one-way tickets out of the country while they still could Wednesday after Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a partial mobilization of military reservists for the war in Ukraine.
Flights filled up quickly and the prices of tickets for remaining connections skyrocketed, apparently driven by fears that Russia's borders could soon close or that Putin could later announce a broader call-up that might send many Russian men of fighting age to the war's front lines.
Tickets for the Moscow-Belgrade flights operated by Air Serbia, the only European carrier besides Turkish Airlines to maintain flights to Russia despite a European Union flight embargo, quickly sold out for the next several days. The price for flights from Moscow to Istanbul or Dubai increased within minutes before jumping again, reaching as high as 9,200 euros ($9,119) for a one-way economy class fare.
Russian wisdom is not to pick a fight with the government. In historical memory this rarely ended well for their people. Gulag etc. So I'd be surprised if any significant popular protest would emerge beyond token ones. Voting with their feet, evasion however is more of the common pattern...
Russians in revolt: More than 800 arrests are made while anti-war protestors are dragged away by officers in blacked-out helmets after taking to the streets in 37 cities following Putin's decision to mobilise the country due to heavy losses in Ukraine
(The banner in girl's hands is a pun on "mobilization" - "No "mogil"ization", where "mogila" = "grave" in Russian)

If a portion of a country wants to secede, hold a vote.

That solution worked out great once for American South :) Just ask Abraham Lincoln...
But there's a solution to the solution - occupy part of the foreign country and let those who stuck in food lines in occupied rubble vote to secede to invaders... Perfect! " As Trump commented once - "Genius!" :)

The country who takes possession of the land must pay the costs of relocation including value of property and future income and 'pain in the ass' penalties as well.
Yes, there will always be people who are displaced, regardless of the side.... and it's shit, but it beats nuclear war.

Have nukes, have oil - will travel and all your base belong to us! Personally since young age I learned to love the concept of Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD) - and stopped worrying about nuclear wars... And if one happens with MAD and extinction of the human race in nuclear fire and winters - such race finally proved to the universe that it's not fit to exist and can go to hell with Darwin medal around its neck. Good riddance - the planet will patiently wait for another, smarter seed. I personally believe nuclear powers could have a direct conventional arms confrontation just fine .. Why? - because it beats nuclear war... :)
