I was more thinking if stuff like this, you'd rather buy Chinese, even if it was American made.

ESG virtue signaling.

Yes I keep an eye on that stuff, too. Fortunately there are alternatives to Patagonia. Unfortunately many outdoors products companies behave the same...

Or, like REI, are predatory towards their own suppliers; they do Walmart-style buying... hog up a small (usually U.S.) manufacturer's production capacity to the extent that the manufacturer will forgo other potential customers. Meanwhile Walmart drags them through the mud with delayed payments, cash strapping the producer and ultimately dictates pricing and terms, or face ruination when Walmart threatens return of unsold inventory.

REI buys up their business partners then immediately ships production overseas. :angryfire:

Only a small percentage of Patagonia products are made in the US

This is a great article that lays out their position:

https://www.patagonia.com/stories/patagonia-clothing-made-where-how-why/story-18467.html

Quote:
We cannot make a claim to be a “Made in America” company; we have always sourced at least half our products outside the U.S. But our percentage of American-made products has decreased over time, as has the U.S. textile industry and the number of domestic high-quality sewing shops. Much of the U.S. apparel manufacturing landscape simply no longer exists. Seattle contractors Cascade, J&E, and Down Products are no longer in business. Pyke Manufacturing of Utah declared chapter 11 in 1994, and Tennessee Apparel, Everite of Pennsylvania, and Linda Apparel of San Francisco have long since shut their doors. It is very difficult for clothing companies to find factories in the U.S. that meet our standards; the textile industry is much smaller; the work has shifted overseas.

AFAIK some of Patagonia bags are berry compliant and made in the USA like their Black Hole Duffle bag. Not everything they make is USA made but some of them are USA made enough for berry compliance.

But they have questionable politics so I was wondering where people would rather spend money on.

Some Filson products.

Problem is a lot of textiles are made with American cotton, shipped to china to process, tben back to US to make clothing.

Very true. I think the pliers are still 100% US though. It's getting hard to find a full product line made here, sadly.
