Drivers Pay For Every Mile They’re On The Road

New Proposal In Washington Would Have Drivers Paying For Every Mile They’re On The Road

https://www.yahoo.com/autos/proposal-washington-drivers-paying-every-141333483.html

Currently, the gas tax costs drivers 49.4 cents per gallon, but according to KIMA Action News, a new proposal will do away with that in favor of a pay-per-mile system that’ll cost two and a half cents per mile driven.

That will increase it at least twice.

I don't see a huge issue with pay per mile. With all the EVs and Hybrids in this state, along with the extra high cost of transportation due to all the water, ferries, bridges. I damn sure don't pay my fair share with my car getting 50mpg. Of course the extra money will probably be mismanaged and wasted, so I guess there is that. People with low fuel consumption vehicles, do not contribute to wear and tear like normal cars. Cost per mile/weight of the rig is the way it should have always been.

I haven't heard how they are going to monitor the mileage... are they going to set up stations again to have you come in and read them? Yearly/bi-yearly/quarterly? Or are they going to require dongles on every car (that will collect more than just mileage)? Not sure if EVs have OBDII ports.... I don't want any .gov dongles on my car.... I'm sure the insurance companies are going to jump on this to for per mile charges....

What about the out of state or out of country drives? Exempting those implies GPS, opening another can of worms.

I foresee GPS spoofers being big business.

This is what your car will look like when the .gov gets done "mandating" all the dingle balls they can possibly think of to do everything we won't like.

And what about out of state cars here for longer durations??? They use the roads and pay no gas tax? I see plenty of out of state plates around lately....

They need to figure out how to apply per mile ONLY to the EVs and hybrids....

That was the majority of replies listed under that article.

And did you catch the one remark, in the article, that said the state would do away with the gas tax?

They'll do that as soon as we get our $30 tabs.

Pay by the mile will be a GPS based system affixed to your license plate. All vehicles have to replace their plates every 5 or so years anyway. Collector vehicles and vanity plates will not be left out. Out of state vehicles will have to stop and get a RFID sticker for their windshield that will "estimate" their fees and bill them through the mail. Likely, most people will link their banks to the FedNOW accounts to make it "convenient" by having it deducted monthly. It will end up costing you more than the current gas tax regardless of how it is implemented. I am mostly wondering who will be getting exemptions??? Yes, insurance companies (and others) will be willing to pay big bucks to get that info (Or "Manage it for the state.....") and I'm sure Jay and Bob already have plans for that money.
Roads will remain in their current state until no one can afford to drive on them.

I know they will add this to the gas tax.

If they are stupid enough to eliminate gas tax I am 100% going all in on big block cars and trucks.

I already rarely drive my 454 Suburban because of its 11 miles a gallon.

There is a way around taxing out of state drivers. 2 pumps. One taxed the other untaxed. Scan your state ID to buy untaxed gas.

EV folks get hit pretty good with additional registration fee for the very reason that we don't pay gas tax. Given the miles I drive, compared to a 25mpg(only one car I own gets that high of mpg) car that is $.60/gal if I were buying gasoline. We hardly get a free pass, not to mention we pay higher weight based fees as well. My reg will probably be well over 1K next year with all the shit this state piles on. $30 tabs my fukin ass.

This is actually good news for my pickup at 15mpg and work van at 12mpg. $0.25 per mile equates to 20mpg break even at our current gas price.
So I guess everyone should forget about ev and hypermiling and just go buy a V-8 for funsies?

More people need to protest the tabs by not renewing them.
