Thats a very real possibility. I dont think they put much effort into it to get the info of a turn in out there and had no media coverage besides the daily O that i know of

From the sounds of it, there may be more people there to buy the guns than to turn them in. If I lived closer I would show up too, instead I let my friends over there know.

That would be interesting.

"Thurston County gun turn has record participation, of legal gun buyers"

I would love to make it, but am not sure how my Fire Chief would react. I volunteer at Griffin up the road and we do some training with these guys. What do ya'll think?

Simple answer.

Ask the chief. Maybe he will want to join you. LOL

I have family that is a firefighter/paramedic in olympia. I know quite a few of the firefighters there are into guns.

Still no response from the email sent on 12/29. I just re-sent it through the County "fill in the blank" email system on their website.

Uh oh Shaggy...

Mr XXXX,

All firearms turned in at this event will be disposed of in accordance with Sheriff's Office policy. That policy states that we will exchange surrendered firearms to a federally licensed firearms dealer for credit. That credit will be used to purchase ammunition for agency firearms proficiency training. We will, however, give those people surrendering a firearm the option of having the weapon destroyed. We will also have an agency armorer on site to evaluate all firearms surrendered. If we identify a weapon that appears to be a collectible, we will suggest to the owner that they consider contacting a dealer to evaluate the value of the weapon.

TCSO will not allow solicitors on site to offer to purchase firearms intended to be surrendered.

If you have any further questions, you can contact me directly.

So what is their legal grounds for disallowing citizens to be on public property to conduct legal firearms transactions?

Secondly, this is sure to draw some media attention, so how would the department feel if they were portrayed on the local news prohibiting the above?

Asked....

Thank you Lt. Elwin!
A couple of quick additional questions after reading your email.
1) Does the Dept. have a pre-selected FFL or is it open for "bidding"?
2) As with most gun-buy back / turn-ins happen around the Country, there is always a small group of people who attempt to intercept the firearms to help bolster their collection. How does the TCSO plan on dealing with the event being open to the public and on public property in regards to these people? What RCW or Statute would they be in violation of that could have them removed from the premises?
Thanks for your time,
Dan

I'm still going, solely because I KNOW they have no grounds to remove people wanting to buy guns there.

Unless maybe they have gotten a permit or something from the city that designates that area "private" during the event.

But I'm still going.

Yeah, sounds like they want to simply make up rules as they go. Which in my book is a no go. Regardless of what they say, they are wrong. People on public property doing nothing wrong, not causing a disturbance, and obeying the laws cannot be removed just because they said so.
