The reality of the situation is that there is going to 40+ people there looking to buy firearms and 3 people that show up....
This is most likely.
What about a stack of $50s that has everyone's handle written on it in a random order. Your bill comes up and that's the firearm you get. This way it also encourages a meet and greet, to not only meet other members but try and swap.

delliotg... some of the issues i see with some of the suggestions is some of these people may not want to deal with or want any trail leading to them...its suppose to be anonymous, part of the point with turn ins. So for me paperwork and FFLs etc shouldnt be part of the process
So whos willing to head up and be part this committee or group??
I should be available most of the time the only exception may be mon-wed eves starting the first of the year as my work schedule may have me out of town those nights
Lets get some commitments going here folks....only got a couple weeks to sort this out
So if there ends up being others looking to buy we need to at least appear to be the best option, this is one of the reasons that im not sure a sparse $20 will get the goods if you got a mob auction going on elsewhere. Professional and responsible to keep the guns safe is how we need to appear.
This could really run the gamut from absolutely nothing worthwhile showing up to dozens that we may not even get the option of looking at. We want to be thier best looking option
My initial thoughts are to pool money and everything bought is in a pool until afterwards. then those present can swap and haggle and the rest put up here. If you want a say in how this goes down then be prepared to put in the time and or money!!!
Like i said id be more than happy to front $$ for parts/nonworking, mosins, revolvers, hunting rifles all of which i will most likely have no interest in and would then be available right here or to those present depending on rules established
So...whos in??? more worried about the board than dollars, i think the funding we have covered or will fall in line once rules are established

If they want no paper trail, that's that much easier to deal with, we just need to have a plan in place for the eventualities.
We also need to figure out how to run serial numbers for thefts on the spot. I have no idea how to do that, and I don't see the Thurston County folks wanting to be overly helpful since we'd be circumventing their turn in event. Maybe there are LEO folks on the board that would be willing to help run the numbers on each gun we decide to purchase.
To the owners: are you guys willing to have WaGuns represented, or would you rather be under the radar?
Has anyone done any research on previous turn in events in Thurston and surrounding counties? No point in doing this if they get a dozen people showing up. But if there are hundreds, or even several dozen, it might be worth our time.
I'm willing to help with this, but I'm a nearly two hour drive away from the turn in site. I can be there on the day of for tech support or whatever I can do. I'd be comfortable as the safety guy, or the purchasing agent, but not as the evaluator, there are far better qualified folks on here for that job. I can definitely do the software end of it if we decide that's how we want to keep track of things.

Under the radar is preferred. Like I mentioned before. I will be there wearing WaGuns schwag, but for the most part people there are NOT gunners and I don't want the media spin to reflect poorly on the site. We have a lot to loose.

As an FFL who has been folowing this...I don't want any part of it.
So you guys go ahead on'er.
The TCSO is doing this as a PR event to make them look good to the Anti's and the public at large...Kind of a "Hey look what we are doing to prevent violent gun related crime". You can be sure the media will be there seeing as this is gonna be near the Queens Palace. If a bunch of progun guys show up there and are attempting to "buy" the guns that people are going there to turn in I don't think it is going to be pretty.
I actually feel it will do more harm to our cause and position than it could ever benefit from the rewards.
Now I'm all for acquring guns at the best possible prices...I just don't think this is the best way to go about it.
But that's just me...and most of you know I'm not quite all there.
Flame on...

Definately have to look at how to check and deal with the potential for coming across stolen items, it would be part and parcel of an event like this. I think doing this prior to purchase may scare away items that are indeed valid but people dont want to take a chance, so id say its something we do after the event. Im willing to take that chance considering the possibibility that the other guns that are released to this site will pay for a few we have to turn in
The press release i think said this was a first for the area and due to our relatively small population base im not thinking it will be a big turn out but who knows. Im having a friend at TCSO look into a few things for us. this might also be a good spot for someone whos willing to put in some time to do some research online into other turn ins with same size populations and non crime riddled neighborhoods
At this point it seems best to leave Waguns out of the picture but our group needs to look organized and professional. If dan wants to be there and represent his site he can choose to be out front and handle media or not. We dont want a bad mark on something we dont own unless the owner does it to himself. Dan you wanna be part of the board/discussions/rules???
Ya i dont think TCSO will be happy, but then when are they??. this isnt about what they want. I find it most difficult to believe that the pile isnt cherry picked before being "destroyed" wink wink. So are we any less valid in our effort to keep them from destroying items that really have no valid reason to be destroyed besides a superficial PR scheme???

Agreed.
Because there
will be media spin, I can't see a lot of good for WaGuns.org, on the other end of this.
As a member here, I'd really rather not see the name associated with this.

We (un named group at buy in) are but a humble group of law abiding gun enthusiasts that dont wish to see guns destroyed. If the police have determined that it takes assault weapons and hi cap mags to protect them and us then why cant i be equipped in the same manner???
Sun Dec 30, 2012 2:23 pm
The reply (if any) from my email to Lt. Elwin will help show the "feelings" that the LEO have for us at this event. Their response will have to dictate how we proceed and how we handle ourselves.
Sun Dec 30, 2012 2:29 pm
Hopefully we will get a response and in a timely manner. I suspect (if they are smart) they will respond very carefully and with a well crafted, PR dept. checked and approved, statement. To appear to come off as a bully especially in writing, while a group is esentially trying to do the same thing with a similar intent, would be super counterproductive in thier PR attempt with this turn in
Do we have any media friends who would be helpful to our camp guaranteed and wont turn this into something else?? Should local media find this interesting id rather have someone in our corner. Has anyone heard of this from a source other than here? seems like some PR may help bring people in cause they have to hear about it in order to be part of it.
So...no takers for the board? lots of yakkity yak and not much for committment so far

I concur that the TCSO may not like us being there, in fact they may not let us set up anything or even park a vehicle. It very strongly depends on the reply we get from them. if they will allow us space, they may want some sort of proof that we are good guys, may want us to follow some sort of strict protocol, set up early, etc.....
As for time for a pre meet, my available days are currently Tuesdays, Wednesdays, & Saturdays (work long hours the rest.) I know I can make it down there that day as early as needed & stay all day, can meet up & carpool too.
skills- I'm probably not an evaluator(admittedly there's lots I don't know), I'm no PR man, but I can secure actions, make payments, store weapons, call in serial numbers, or even make food & coffee runs. I suppose we could call other county sheriffs departments to see if any are stolen, and even check with multiple depts & online as we are taking them in (might want a phone number list on hand.)

I'm in for this. If the police will permit us to be there at all. I sold an AR for $2600 and I need to save a few woody rifle's lives.

I was going to post on the first page, really, I was.
After seven pages I've only got one thing to say.
This is a bad idea.

Care to elaborate?
Honestly, I don't give a shit how it looks to the media, except that it doesn't turn into bickering and fistfights. Look, regardless of how it actually goes down the media is gonna play it how they want. The people? The people aren't the ones voting on an AWB, so I give a shit what John Q. Public thinks about it. Anti-gunners? They already hate us, don't care to learn about our hobby, and are all out illogical, our actions there aren't going to sway then either way, so I don't care about then. Politicians? Elected officials? Since when have they cared about what the public wants. It's how we got in this mess anyways, they only care enough to get themselves elected another term.
The point being, our actions don't matter a single bit, as long as we are ourselves, respectful, courteous, we should be fine. I am gonna have my ass there to try and buy some guns.
Mon Dec 31, 2012 7:50 am
I have a better idea, set up at the same place as the TCSO buy back, but 1 day early. Post adverts that the buy back starts the day earlier. Buy the guns, have them checked against the stolen gun database, the stolen ones get turned in to the TCSO buy back....
