I think this is a subject where "back of the house" and management disagree. My wife is in the service industry (bar tender) and she is in a constant battle with the "back of the house" (cooks/dish washers). Frequently, the kitchen will prep for close early and leave her customers ordering food high and dry (and hungry).
I have regular experiences on my way to work, stopping for a quick bite and being told that half the menu is in available. Even though the restaurant doesn't close for 20 minutes.

I've been to many establishments that were open late, but the food service portion closed down earlier. It sucks because you expect it to be open. However, if a kitchen is going to close down (despite the restaurant still being open), or start serving a limited menu then it is always nice that the serving staff say so up front.
On a side note I always worry about pissing off the kitchen staff, or wait staff, as I don't want my food tampered with. So if they are getting ready to close up and I want a full ticket of stuff, I would choose to go elsewhere.

Our transfer station closes the gates at 5:30PM. From to time we will get a customer in at 5:29 and then they take 45+ minutes to unload their Uhaul of crap. Not a damn thing we can do about it, because in the end, they are paying for our salary with their dump fees.
But, if I were to walk into a restaurant and realized they closed in 10 minutes, I would leave out of respect for the employees.

I dealt with a few of those guys too. We always went over and asked if they needed help(against company policy).
Now I could be wrong, but in most places end shift can't do clean ups, shut downs and put shit away, atleast that's how it worked any place I've ever worked or helped out at where I was on the last shift.
And yea it sucks when it's one of those types. But... Are you being payed to be there? Are you making over time? Then knock the attitude off, maybe it will get you a tip. I e left $30-$40 + tips on food that was above average(I will NOT tip for average or below average work. I'm sorry, you want a tip.... It's earned not given). And I've been places a half hour before close and been treated awesome... And I have been places where an hour before closing and got greeted like we were the worse people on the planet.
Is it me or is there a lot of bs involving the food industry? $15 minimum wage demands... Started with the fuckers in fast food(and they can't even get my goddamned order right, and they want $15 an hour). Then we have waiters and bar tenders who demand tips and you not come in 10 min they BEFORE close.
Way I see it is extra time at work means extra $$$.

Wife and I walked into a restaurant one evening while at the ocean, the hostess told us they were closing in 30 mins. She was very sweet and I felt she was implying that maybe we should find another place to eat. So we did so, and I wasn't mad or anything. People have obligations after work like picking up kids and such, or maybe a second job.

This makes sense to me.
Maybe if the restaurant staff expects to leave at closing time, then the posted hours should be something like: "Last seating at 9:15, closing time 10:00."

Washington drivers. One little itty bitty micro flurry today on our way from Lacey to Bonney Lake. In our trip to Bonney Lake, there were 10, I swear to god 10 accidents. No shit, and that was just between Lacey and Sumner. Included in the carnage were 2 x mustang and 2 x S-10. We left Lacey at 11, and made it to Bonney Lake at halftime.
