Marveling at my efforts from yesterday.... I have kept an area open in my yard for fruit trees, but have never gotten around to putting any (more) in... Yesterday I decided I would try and attempt to move the plum tree I planted 15 years ago in the less than ideal spot, which I also foolishly planted laurels around --- needless to say the laurels have been smothering it, and I've been meaning to move it, but knew how much of a chore it was gonna be. I started off with the smaller 7' tall/3-4' diameter shoot that had grown and that came out alot easier than I would have imagined. That persuaded me to go after the 10'tall/8' diameter tree... it was a struggle, but it came out much easier than anyone would have guessed --- I was planning on having to use the quad winch to yank it out, but it turned out it wasn't needed. Busted my ass digging two new holes for the trees -- digging in the glacial till and rocks SUCKS ASS. Got them planted --- amazing how much that changed the character of the yard. Kinda funny to see my neighbor's reaction --- he's been planting these 4' bare root trees in his yard --- I plopped in a 7 and 10' trees that are already blooming. Perfect timing for the transplant.

I hear you. Back when I lived in Lacey decided to double dig the front bed in our yard. Man that was brutal digging 24" deep into compacted glacial till. Couldn't believe the pile of rocks dug up out of a relatively small area. Afterwards we backfilled it with a mix of loam and compost that was awesome for gardening.

Congrats on your excavation project and transplanting

As a side note after busting my hump digging out glacial till in Lacey I did some research on how far south the continental ice sheets extended during the Ice Ages. Turns out their southernmost extent was a bit north of Centralia. Presumably the soil from Centralia south is much better.

2 people didn't know how to park, and were on the ragged edge of their spots... So the person I was buying dinner for needed to get out. As I was letting her out, directly in front of the spot, the dude zipped around me on my left and swooped into the space....

It was my fault because I didn't have my turn signal to indicate I was turning into the spot, as I was already partially turned towards it and figured no one would do that.... This is why I asked politely instead of being a dick, and bought the guy a beer for being a cool guy about it.

I drive a 23 foot crew cab pickup, usually just look for an available spot in the back 40 and walk.

Unless the second spot from the door at the Safeway is open.

I broke 2 shovels the first years I was in the house - first one wood, second a fiberglass handle --- thats when I realized I was doing something wrong.... Went out and bought a digging bar.... that is the ONLY thing that makes digging hole possible in this till - a shovel just can't break thru all the rocks - bonus that you can make vertical walls in the hole. I've loaned it out to neighbors - its amazing how quickly they went and got their own. Haven't broken a shovel since... but I was getting pretty close trying to pry the big tree out yesterday.

Digging bar is an excellent idea, wish I had thought of that Amazing that you broke even a fiberglass handle shovel. One thing happened after the big dig at our house... Everytime I walked by our front garden bed, I had a real sense of pride in that place considering all the hard work that went into it.

Yeah - it was the 'prying' that did it --- you hit a big ass rock at the bottom of the hole and the fulcrum is 1/3-1/2 up the handle... not good. Digging bar - you just keep hitting at the edges until you can work it under. I remember how bad I used to fuck up my ankles trying to dig with only a shovel.... now its the shoulders that take the brunt. I could have sworn I was hitting the drain field trenches by how much rock was there, but I know I was nowhere near the field.
