Drove into work with minimal traffic. Michigan street onramp to i5 was not metered.

Slight usual slowdown entering DT. Then getting to work with 3 people in my floor. Yes I’ve been cleared for WFH for the month but god damn I love it when the snitches and bitchz aren’t here.

Prolly gonna roam around downtown after for the lolz.

Neighbor cut down a gigantic poplar and said the rounds were free for the taking. I split about 2 cords today by hand, and I have to say I really like the way it splits. Probably helps that I had first pick of the rounds and was able to grab a bunch of knotless ones!

Knotty rounds are the bane of my existence!

Tell me about it! I split a lot of wood every year - mostly stuff I get for free. I'm not usually the first one to pick it over, either, so I'm often left with the knotty stuff. Just means I have to work a lot harder, and I make a bigger mess in the process. But free wood is free wood!

I'd never split poplar before, and I was kind of expecting it to be junk, but this stuff looks nice. No sap to deal with was also a bonus. Gonna be a couple years until I get around to burning it, though, so I'll reserve final judgment until then.

when it's dry it lights quick but burns fast. Good campfire/bonfire/take the edge off the cold fall-spring morningfire/get laidfire wood, or as a starter for something denser. In the cold winter you'll burn a cord a week as sole heat source.

Log splitters work good on knots. Leaves you with a rather twisted piece, but it all burns the same. I hate swinging axes.

Really? I love splitting wood. It's good exercise and helps relieve stress. Plus, it gets me outside for fresh air and the scent of fresh-cut wood! The big knots are a pain in the ass, I admit, but I've learned my limits and don't even take the rounds that would give me hell anymore. My least favorite part is stacking it, but that's part of the reason I decided to have children.

Its part of the cottonwood family.

I just cut/hauled a Tulip or Yellow Poplar this week that was over 5' in diameter. Very heavy.

Huh, my log splitter doesn't like knots at all. I do have to get the split pieces fairly small to fit our smallish stove (Lil' Smoky).
