it's not a funding problem... it's the fact that they only want to pay so much for a physician... hardly close to market rate at all...
so in places like AZ the pay for a VA doctor is easily 30-40% less than if the doc worked elsewhere...
add to that fact that some of the VA patients are very complicated (typically very elderly) or on high doses of narcotics and have extensive mental health issues (not judging vets here, just stating facts of who end up going to be seen - the healthy vets typically don't need care)... and sometimes it's just not worth it..
they need to pay docs what the market is paying and they can get more docs than they need... if they paid me what I make today, I'd move to the VA, but unfortunately I doubt that's going to happen..

If you want to see the future of government run healthcare just look at how they handle this. This is a relatively small group of people folks and look what happens. What a fucking disaster.

No offense, but I disagree...my opinion might be skewed a little bit because I've worked at the VA hospital and start full time there next month. I've been in healthcare for the last 15 years and the VA healthcare system is the largest network of hospitals in the country. I've never seen a healthcare organization bigger than the VA.
Individually, there are larger healthcare systems, but combined, there are no healthcare systems larger than the VA.
As far as how it was managed and the issues therein, I have no comment.

But you can't get sued for malpractice at the va right? I'll save my stories but yes, they are beyond pathetic there.

I'll soon be getting out of the Army and I'm planning on going through the VA to make a few claims, and honestly I'm scared as hell to even start this process. I've heard such horror stories about this process. I've been on the fence about even doing it for a few months. Do any of you guys have any tips or suggestions I should take? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

yes... which is why some docs that shouldn't be practicing anywhere end up working at the VA for cheap..

MD's at the VA are required to carry malpractice insurance. While I've never heard of doctors being sued at the VA, I have seen doctors lose their license and get kicked out because of malpractice. There are repercussions to gross negligence.

I got 3 months left. I've started it. I don't have a lot that I want to claim, but I do have a few things. From what I've been told is I have up to a year to finish making my claims.

Something Shinseki can do NOW:Publish a list of VA employees he would fire and replace if he had legal authority to do so.
Goal: To get Congress to give him that authority - with a veto-proof majority to keep Obama/Holder out of the loop.
