Morning from PA-
One week ago (not even a full week), Andy fell from Little Si. Since then, our family has learned how strong a commitment you people have in the Great Northwest. Commitment to provide aid and comfort to a fellow outdoor enthusiast. Commitment to rescue and evacuate a fallen climber. Commitment to provide top-notch facilities of trauma care for climbers to get started into recovery.
By the end of yesterday, Andy had been taking wheelchair rides! Short trips down a long hall. And all that activity built up his appetite! He is getting ready to roll!
The medicines have worked themselves out of his system so the docs could evaluate for any residual concussion effects. All tests are normal, including his total memory loss of the fall.
He will be working hard for a long time, but has all of you who assisted him to provide encouragement and incentive all along the journey. He will continue to show his commitment to get healed and his passion for climbing.

Yeah, that's how we do things here. We treat everyone like they're family/friends --- so we take care of our own. It is one of the most basic human instincts, helping others. There's no charge for rescue in Washington state. Washington has a long history of search and rescue and King County is one of the busiest jurisdictions in the nation (125+ missions a year). The volunteer organizations go back about 60 years here. Training hours are 50-60% of total volunteer hours.

King County has also been at the forefront of emergency medical care, with Medic One/paramedic programs starting here in the early 70's.
Heart attack survival rates in King County are now at 62%. National average is 10% with some places (Detroit I think) as low as 2%.

Remember the majority of SAR groups here in WA are all volunteer. We pay for our gas, food, and the majority of our gear. Most teams even travel out of our own county areas to assist in the larger SAR missions. I know our team does a Spaghetti feed once a year to help raise funds, and submit to various entities for grants. We don't do it for glory, matter of fact our team has a "penalty" if we get caught on camera. (anybody caught has to by ice cream for the team at the next meeting)
