Republicans propose halting foreign aid until border surge stops

http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/211058-gop-rep-cut-off-central-american-aid-until-border-is-fixed

Congressional Republicans are pushing legislation that would halt aid to Mexico and three Central American countries until they take action to stem the flow of children across the border.

Freshman Rep. Randy Weber's (R-Texas) bill, known as the Illegal Entry Accountability Act, would halt aid to Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras, the three countries where most of the immigrants are coming from.

More than 52,000 unaccompanied minors, mostly from those three countries, have been detained on the U.S. border after entering through Mexico, mainly through the Rio Grande Valley into Texas.

This is a good idea. At least it's a start.

Hell ya!!!!!
Then use the dollars that would otherwise be used to appease a government to help shore up the border. It's a win win.

how about they also stop giving billions to Israel each year, so long as they expect us to pacify the middle east for them rather than using their own perfectly capable military.

We give them billions but I don't think they are under any illusion that we give a rats ass about them. The threat of withholding billions is probably why Israel has not cleaned someones clock except in small doses. IMHO

Bill Gates on foreign aid:

http://annualletter.gatesfoundation.org ... n=myth-two

"Many people think that development aid is a large part of rich countries’ budgets, which would mean a lot can be saved by cutting back. When pollsters ask Americans what share of the budget goes to aid, the average response is “25 percent.” When asked how much the government should spend, people tend to say “10 percent.” I suspect you would get similar results in the United Kingdom, Germany, and elsewhere.

Here are the actual numbers. For Norway, the most generous nation in the world, it’s less than 3 percent. For the United States, it’s less than 1 percent.

One percent of the U.S. budget is about $30 billion a year. Of that, roughly $11 billion is spent on health: vaccines, bed nets, family planning, drugs to keep people with HIV alive, and so on. (The other $19 billion goes to things like building schools, roads, and irrigation systems.)

I don’t want to imply that $11 billion a year isn’t a lot of money. But to put it in perspective, it’s about $30 for every American. Imagine that the income tax form asked, “Can we use $30 of the taxes you’re already paying to protect 120 children from measles?”4 Would you check yes or no?"

According to the Financial Degree Center we actually paid 37,680,000,000 in financial aid in 2012, which is 1%. I am not splitting hairs over 30 vs 37.

http://www.financedegreecenter.com/foreign-aid/

According to the Brookings Institute, 122 million American actually paid taxes.

http://www.forbes.com/sites/joshbarro/2 ... -is-wrong/

That is 308 dollars a person. I would check no. The more people you save from measles, the more people you will have to save from measles. Now if I had no choice, but I had a box that said "would you like this money to go to condoms, birth control, and vasectomies"? I would check yes.

Most of these countries do not deserve a penny. Call me heartless, but we all know throwing money at the problem does not fix the problem.

Why don't we spend our dollars where it will actually make a difference? We can pour billions into sending our guys into a foreign country to fight terrorists, rather than that country getting off its ass and sending their own people in to do that job, which is why I think the new Iraqi military has been so laid back (from my own observations, my observations could be wrong). Or, we could pour that money into supplies (food and water) and let the other countries take care of their own military problems outside of food and water.

Or we could just pull out of everywhere and say to hell with the rest of the world. We ought to be our own nation, looking out for our own. Why not pour those billions of dollars into the US and help capable homeless people get jobs and housing? Why not get them jobs so they can pay back into the system like the rest of us do?

Actually, here's my big question: We got attacked on 9/11, it was apparently terrorists out of Afghanistan. Why did it suddenly shift to LETS FUCK UP IRAQ AND THAT SADDAM GUY while leaving Afghanistan in the background? Where was the jump?

I totally agree! We have too many "of our own" who need help. The rest of the world looks at us as their long lost rich uncle, fuck 'em.
Take care of our own and cut out all payments to the rest of the world. Most of them hate us anyway so by taking their allowance away they will at least learn not to bite the hand that feeds them again!
