Taking a gun into Yellowstone?

I have a friend that is going camping in Yellowstone and just asked me if she could take her shotgun in to the park.
I thought I would throw the question out to the experts.

Actually dont have a correct answer but,
was going through Chinook pass this wknd and the sign posted was "hunting weapons not permitted".
I've been up there a number of times where a park ranger saw me carrying a sidearm without any questions. Being it is a national park, would assume it would also apply there.
Think a shotgun may be considered a hunting weapon though.

Call the rangers in the park and ask them. Everything else is speculation.

IIRC, federal parks fall under the same laws of the state which they are located. I read about it when I was curious if i could carry on MT Rainier last summer when i went camping. it was allowed. Only time i've OC'd and not felt like a douche/target. got a few stares from rangers and others but was legal.

National parks follow state laws. No weapons in the buildings. I've OC'd at the sledding area at Rainier with no issue. Just be aware that if you walk around with an orange vest saying that you are hunting wabbits may cause some concern.

The question was if it was OK to carry a shotgun into the Federal Park. Chances are NO. Only sidearms and within the state laws of the adjoining State(s).
Now if you can get that shotgun to fit a holster

I think in the car unloaded, like here is OK. Unloaded gun = paperweight. You need a loaded pistol on the hip for the two legged creeps. I never had an issue with four legged critters there, just give them their space.

Thank you Obama for signing that bill....!
No weapons in the buildings.
Well, no weapons in any federal buildings, i.e. ranger stations.

Is this to keep in the car or wandering around with it over their shoulder?

no idea, I just got back from a 12 day trip thru Cody,wy /Yellowstone/Jackson hole and carried my .40, but I conceal, I did see signs that hunters had to have tags for animals, even if just traveling thru Yellowstone.
I'd call the ranger station and find out.
I don't see why not though, kids are much more dangerous then shot guns.....
PS, Jackson hole has been screwed since I was last there in the late 80's. now is a corporate town, every other store is a gallery or bistro

Did you check out the firearm collection at the Buffalo Bill Cody Museum in Cody? I drooled all over the carpet for hours!

It is the federal buildings in NPs that you cannot carry in. The concessions are run by private companies.

Looks to me like open carry in the park is okay.
Interesting to note that the change came from "The Credit Card Accountability Responsibility and Disclosure Act of 2009"
From the Yellowstone NP Website:
http://www.nps.gov/yell/parkmgmt/lawsandpolicies.htmFIREARMS IN PARKS [Edited to correct formatting and remove links]
As of February 22, 2010, a new federal law allows people who can legally possess firearms under applicable federal, state, and local laws, to legally possess firearms in this park.
The Credit Card Accountability Responsibility and Disclosure Act of 2009, was enacted May 22, 2009 and will become effective February 22, 2010. Section 512 of this law; Protecting Americans from Violent Crimes, supersedes the uniform treatment of firearm possession in the national park system outside Alaska under the regulations found at 36 C.F.R. 2.4.
It is the responsibility of visitors to understand and comply with all applicable state, local, and federal firearms laws before entering this park. Yellowstone encompasses parts of Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho. Each state has different regulations and these are listed below.
Federal law also prohibits firearms in certain facilities in this park (such as visitor centers, government offices, etc.); those places are marked with signs at all public entrances. Hunting and discharge of firearms remain prohibited in Yellowstone National Park.
Firearms should not be considered a wildlife protection strategy. Bear spray and other safety precautions are the proven methods for preventing bear and other wildlife interactions.
