Most of the liberal arguments I have seen involving lax gun laws go along the lines of "well, yes, Chicago has strict gun laws, but what's to stop someone from going (insert distance here) away to a place that DOESN'T? We need a federal blah blah blah blah"

Under reasons, they forgot to list lack of respect for fellow man. It's cultural deterioration up there IMHO.

One of these shootings, where fortunately the victim was lawfully carry and able to return fire, was over them touching a drink the assailant left on their car. I think gun laws are the least of their concerns...

Yup. They got shot at because he left a drink on their car. Chiraq needs a better education system.

Cesare Beccaria said it, and Thomas Jefferson repeated it...
The laws that forbid the carrying of arms are laws of such a nature. They disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes.
Can it be supposed that those who have the courage to violate the most sacred laws of humanity, the most important of the code, will respect the less important and arbitrary ones, which can be violated with ease and impunity, and which if strictly obeyed, would put an end to personal liberty so dear to men, so dear to the enlightened legislator- and subject innocent persons to all the vexations that the guilty alone ought to suffer?
Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man.

The culture of corruption that is so rampant in large eastern cites, has become the national standard. With the current administration setting the example, expect this to spread. A disarmed public, and a corrupt private police force who are just as much thugs as the gangs are, this is the end result. Add in the summer heat, and an immoral population, and it's a powder keg.
