Pellet grills

Sun Jul 13, 2014 8:07 pm

My big 4 burner grill is finally starting to fail, looking at either buy a new one, or drop $ to fix it (burners and vaporizers). I started doing smoking just over a year ago and have been using a propane smoker quite a bit. I am looking to consolidate down to one unit for everything.

Starting to think it is time to step up to a higher end cooking set-up. Been researching and sort of zeroed in on the Rectec and the Louisiana LG900. Price points are the same. The Rectec has a huge pellet hopper, impeccable reviews and 24mos no interest financing. The LG900 has lot larger cooking area, meat probe and Flame Broil ability for direct flame grilling, and option for a cold smoker to be added later. Both feature digital controls and set and forget cooking, and 3yr+ warranties.

Anyone have any experience with these or any other pellet grill/smoker that does a decent job at real grilling as well as smoking?

Traeger. My brother in law has one. I'll be getting mine soon.

Big +1 on the Traeger.

My Dad cooks/smokes on one and the old bastard can still outgrill me. Probably always will.

I got my traeger from costco.. also bought some grill grates to fill the whole cooking area AAANNNNDDDD... it is awesome....

I did my first rib smoke for the 4th and the applewood flavor really soaked into that rib, it was sinful...

the convenience of leaving the smoker and coming back without burned food is also awesome...

the meat also stayed moist despite the 4 hour smoke... just don't open the grill until it's done... and apparently this is a feature that works great in pellet grills but not as well in propane smokers...

I have a Daniel Boone for Green Mountain Grills...No complaints at all, use it all the time.

My neighbor has one he loves it he would not even buy a G-2 trigger for his AK until he was sure it was the best.

Traegers are good. Mine broke about a month into owning it.

Got a replacement part in 2 days. Easy to swap out.

Pellet grills are like a Microwave for smoking meats. If it don't burn real Wood it may as well be propane. :wink05:

Boom! Try a little googly fu to see what those pellets are made. Heres a hint, its sawdust and flavored oil.
Use a cheap wal mart side box smoker with real wood or real wood charcoal. Can get quality wooden charcoal at Winco.

That is exactly why I got it. There are days when I just do not feel like busting out the big ass smoker. Don't feel like stoking the fire.

I just want to Ron Popeil that shit.

Same with me. On a 16hr shoulder cook the last thing I want is to be up every 30min checking wood, making sure temp is right. That is what I am dealing with right now, and FUCK THAT SHIT. Right now my smoker is not getting it done and holding me back on trying new things because it is not reliable. I am looking for a simple all around rig that can put some flavor in my normal grilling and also put decent smoke into my low and slow. The new pellet rigs are finally there. 150* low and lots of smoke and still able to crank up all the way to 600* for grilling/searing.

Not all pellets are made the same either. you have to be selective in your choice, some are crap, some are not. Just like ammo, you have your cheap ass dirty steel cased fmj or your higher end brass cased fmj.

WOW, very interesting on the traeger following... I had always thought Traeger, but had ruled them out since so many of the recent reports I have been hearing are that since 2008 the quality has gone way down. They outsourced all units to china and cut back on materials.. Lot of controller issues, paint flaking internally while cooking and rusting bodies, pretty sad actually given the pricetag on these rigs.
