Tire Shopping . . . GRRRRR

Mon Jul 21, 2014 9:14 pm

Well, I picked up a screw in my CR-V tire tonight. It's a big ol' hole, and it's in the tread but almost touching the corner where it meets the sidewall, so I'm expecting that it won't be repairable. I put the spare tire on, and I'm planning to hit a tire shop tomorrow to get the bad news.

I just looked through the websites of Les Schwab, Big O, and Costco and discovered that it's pretty damned near impossible to truly learn anything or make any decisions this way. So, at this point I guess I'll pick one of those places or Discount Tire, show up tomorrow, and probably just buy whatever they steer me towards.

I don't like to be this uninformed when spending this kind of money. :frust:

I don't drive this car hard. I want tires that will be quiet and will last . . . though I understand that shit happens (like this screw) and the chances of the tires lasting to the end of their warranty period are almost nil.

Any suggestions? Thoughts? Should I just buy something with a high treadwear rating and pay whatever they ask for any warranties that are offered?

My tires are 225/65R17, if that matters.

Thanks for any help.

Oh . . . and my CR-V has as-needed AWD; it kicks in when the front tires lose traction.

Does this mean that I'm going to need to replace all four tires?

My mechanic got my Dura-tracks from Discount tires, I havent heard anything bad about them. Not 100% sure on AWD, but you may just have to buy two tires so they can have the same tread. I'm torn on tire warranties, never really used them myself.

Expect to pay $800 to $1000 for a set of 4. Ours for the old lady's rig are about the same size and we just priced them. The higher the mileage rating, the more expensive. It's the 17" rim that gets ya. A cheap ass set of 15"s are $500-$700.

No, you just have to keep all four the same rolling radius or diameter. They need to be the same exact size (###/###R##), though, if you want to rotate all four later.

If money's tight, select the two (of the three unpunctured ones on the car now) with the most tread left and put those on the rear. Buy two new tires of the same size and put them on the front.

A good site for learning and buying is tirerack.com - they'll drop ship to a local installer they trust or they can ship to your home.

Les Schwab is the most expensive but they stand by their work and warranty. I don't use them however, as I can rarely afford the upfront costs. I got my last set of tires for my Buick at Sears, mostly because I could put it on the Sears card. I had to kick their ass to make sure everything was done right, but in the end, I haven't thought about tires for a couple years now. Sorry, that's probably doesn't help you much. Sears might be worth a look for price comparison though. And they will match Costco, and others, if you bring in the quote.

That^^^

with your puncture and low tread, Id say go to napa and just get a tire kit. takes a few min and done. it will get you around till tire time.

I did have swab for the last 8yrs. only because im on the road alot. my last set I bought 2 yrs ago look new. yes they do honor their work with rotation, tire care but balancing sometimes it 2 times and they blame the machine cough cough.. costco ive heard good things same with discount. forgot who the member was that we could look up. Sears I gave up 15yrs ago for some runaround reason, but the charge card helps

with a new rig. waiting to hear who you go with. costco would be my next move but after hearing the CEO inviting "OHSHIT" im having doubts don't need money going down the hole

Buying tires? Discount tire buddy, they have never done me wrong.
...and they give a Boeing discount. :thumbsup2: Go to the one down by Uwajimaya in Renton, or the one in the highlands by RTC.

A lot of dealers have buy 3 get one free sales frequently. I know Pep Boys does a similar deal but the 4th tire is only free after a mail in rebate. I recommend Michelin Energy if you are going to be keeping it on the pavement.

I had a situation like yours a few years ago, the truck picked up a nail in the same spot as you are describing. First shop flat out refused to patch it because of where it was at, so I found the shadiest looking tire shop in town and convinced them to fix it, but they said they wouldn't warranty the fix. I ran on it for another 2 years, drove it from Lincoln, Nebraska to here, and finally ended up replacing it last year due to wear. The patch never even leaked. If you can't find a shop to patch it, just get a patch kit from your favorite parts store and give it a shot, best case you end up not spending the money on new tires, worst case you're out a few bucks for the patch.
