CDL to drive a firetruck ?

Tue Jul 22, 2014 6:31 pm

Can ya drive one with a regular license?
I found this on the net. $2900 bucks for a 1979 working fire engine.
I won't be grabbing this up since I don't have a place to park it.
WAGuns total conversion?

Is get it just for the kids to play on. Make it immobile and safe but it would be one hell of a lawn toy

You don't need a CDL if you are a proper firefighter, but not sure how you'd get on not being one.

The pumps and generators all worth more than the cost of the whole thing.

If it's private, not for hire, then no, you don't need a special license.

If it's private, and for hire, and over 26,001gvwr, then you will need at the very least a class B.

If you are a firefighter driving a vehicle registered to a fire dept based in Washington State, and you have taken the appropriate EVAP course, then you don't need a CDL either:

http://www.dol.wa.gov/driverslicense/cdlexempt.html

Firefighters and law enforcement personnel are exempt when operating emergency equipment if they carry the certification card proving they have completed the Emergency Vehicle Accident Prevention Program (EVAP).

Washington State is pretty clear on it....some states say "when operating emergency vehicles on emergency calls" therefore leaving a huge gray area for parades, events, taking the truck in for service, etc.

The state of Wa does not require a firefighter to have a CDL to drive a fire truck BUT I'm not sure about private citizens...

Now, that and the fact that even diesel will get ya 8 MPG you're gonna go broke on fuel and even less if ya got the lights going.... This aint no modified Ex Cop car.................

It's beautiful, a classic Seagrave pumper. But it is stripped of all the basic equipment. And without a siren you can forget about parades.
I used to drive a 1968 Crown pumper back when I was a Volunteer Fire Captain. The old engines are bad ass. They didn't have any automatic transmissions back then either. You really had to know how to drive them. The maintenance will most likely be cost prohibitive though. Curiously he did not list the hours on the pump or engine. That would be the key. Considering that it has been left outside, it's still in really good shape.

Nope. I won't be buying it. Anyone else can have a go at restoring/converting it.

I've helped the father in law with 2 of his American LaFrance firetrucks. One was '60's era, the other 70's. First one was REAL nice and we polished the shit out of it and brought the gold leaf out like crazy. The second one was left out in the winter by the previous owner and froze the water gauge lines. I spent a shit ton of time replacing them before he gave in and sold it off. The pump leaked like a bitch and probably was cracked, but I never got a chance to really run down what was wrong with it.

Gotta watch out for the old-style sirens. They're finger choppers!
