Just great... talk about bad timing...

From KXLY:
Lincoln County Sheriff's deputies are looking for a group of men who accidentally started the Watermelon Hill fire while target shooting at a location between Fishtrap Lake and Sprague Saturday afternoon.

The timing of this couldn't be worse. Tards like this are going to ruin our hobby. Dammit! :cussing:

This is why I asked people not to shoot at non established ranges.

Can lead or copper-jacket bullets with no steel, tracer, or incendiary material in them start a grass fire?

I've never heard of it. Had to be tracers or tannerite or something stupid for the dry conditions. Knowing your backstop is part of responsible shooting too. These guys had to be doing more than just plinking in a safe pit to have started a fire.

Real tannerite doesn't cause fires.

I wouldn't think so, but there's a lot of ammo out there that has steel in it. Bimetal jacket and such. Ricochet off a rock, throw a spark in dry grass and you've got yourself a fire.

It may have not even been due to shooting.

About 10-11 years ago in Wenatchee a girl my friend was dating started a fire by driving her little car into some dry grass. The heat from the engine started the fire.

I'm moving to Wenatchee in 2 weeks, when I lived there before I never had a membership to the range up on Fancher I just went with friends.

How difficult is it to get a membership there?

Oh, that is just the cost for me to answer.

No wait, membership runs September to September, you do need to have an RSO certify you for the eight hundred yard line. However the 440 line does not require any certification. Be mindful that in the summers we do share portion of the land with the racing oval. A couple Saturdays a month quite a few of the various ranges are closed.

The only real wait is sometimes all the action bays are filled. There is only one action bay that allows shotguns. Shotguns are not allowed anywhere else except the trapline. You can blame idiots for that one.

It is unlikely to do so, however you will find that most of the idiots that start wildfires are guys running surplus or bimetal ammo.

Rocks + bimetal = Sparky sparks spark.
