not surprising outside the unemployment office as pathetic as it is but to say these people have no other options is BS and a lie.

I actually worked at a place were they hire LEGAL immigrants on Harbor Island were we loaded and unloaded pork,chicken,beef and 100 lbs sacks of lima beans onto train cars and trucks.
That shit was back breaking. I have to admit I only lasted about a month and a half until I found a different job.

it's actually very complicated and some of the laws makes no sense...

1. you either are a relative of a US citizen or become a relative by marriage

2. you have a skill that is needed in the US or you have an investment (1million$ minimum) and will employ at least 5 non-relatives (number may be wrong). they also severely cap this to prevent competition with US citizens.. even though the typical scenario is that these folks boost the economy but still want to limit their growth

3. you win a lottery (limited to certain countries)

4. you ask for refugee or asylum status...

typically the skilled immigrant that becomes a citizen because they have an education (minimum 4 year bachelor's degree) and typically adds positively to society..

the others are hit or miss... some that come here due to family end up on welfare, and a lot of those that come in as a refugee are on welfare...

so the myth that illegal immigrants are the leeches of the welfare system is just not true... it's the legal citizens that are.. immigrant or not..

Fine. 10 to 15 years to be a citizen ( I've known folks from South Africa and elsewhere doing it in less) or 16yrs here illegally. It's hard because it's worth it. And while I agree legal citizens are the biggest leach illegals get healthcare and licenses just the same or easier. No hospital can turn away someone regardless of ability to pay right doc?

not exactly true.. they are required to provide emergency care to the point of stabilization... after that they do not have to do anything else.

you can't have elective surgery but could get open heart surgery if you're dying..

so the problem is people let themselves get "emergent" to get care which is a bad way to go...

in CA, the govt subsidizes the govt hospitals and actually go beyond the minimum because there is a fund that compensates the hospital for providing care to illegals...

you gotta love california...

but that's as far as it goes in most states, no office visits, no meds, etc.. except..... in california ... MediCAL covers illegals... so the myth is true in california.. but not much many other places for now..

Well, do you know how? Through lobbying! Most other countries allow people in based on a scorecard system which awards points for certain qualities, such as age (ability to adapt), education, sought after professions, etc. 30 y.o. software developer from MIT? You're in. 50 y.o. unemployed with less than high school? You're out.

That's not how we do things, however. We have special interest groups that work hard on inviting people into the country based on their... well, special interests. For instance, a wave of Jewish immigrants from former Soviet Union (this is how I came in). Everyone could get in, if they had the right ethnicity. NE Philadelphia is still full of people who speak marginal English and alternate between crappy jobs, unemployment, welfare, and SSI.

Or the whole brouhaha with the "illegal immigrants" which is such a rallying point among Republicans.

The solution is actually super simple - impose significant fines on employers who hire undocumented immigrants. You know, like in Microsoft - I guarantee you, in fact, I would bet you $1000 on the spot - that we don't have a SINGLE illegal immigrant programmer employed. Because, you know, we do extensive background checks for our employees, and this is enough to weed people who should not work here out.

But, of course, illegal immigrants make Republican core donor base TONS of $$$s - by providing cheap labor, and also by keeping wages down - so when Republicans come to power - guess what, NOTHIGN happens. And never will.

And it goes on and on and on.

My entire family can here legally from North Korea. Then again, that crap was easier in the 60's and 70's.
