Easy question RE: Banks

Thu Jul 24, 2014 12:11 pm

Today there was a security guard and one other person shot outside of a bank in Seattle. In the comments I saw someone said the usual, "but guns aren't allowed there. How did this happen?"

Well, this got me to thinking. I've read the laws for WA. I don't recall seeing that concealed carry (or open for that matter) in banks is illegal. So my question is obvious. Is it illegal in WA to carry in a bank? If so, can someone point me to the RCW? I'll continue looking as well. I've carried in my bank many times concealed and don't want to find myself in bracelets because I didn't know.

I assume that if its a federal bank then obviously its not allowed. I talking about banks suck a Bank of America, Key Bank, etc....

I cc at my bank all the time. My understanding is that the only restriction would be if individual banks had a problem with it, they could request you not carry (you know, like Target and Ikea do) but it's not illegal. I've never seen any kind of sign at my bank.

it's not illegal, even open carry is allowed unless the bank posts signs at which point all they can do is ask you to leave or trespass you if you don't

That's what I figured. I didn't remember seeing that in the RCWs but thought I'd make sure and ask those who have probably been carrying longer than I have. Thanks for the replies.

Banker here. No law against it at all, unless the bank specifically states no firearms allowed with a posted notice. Just as other have stated, it becomes a trespass issue. Lots of us do carry though.

My wife is a bank manager. They have a no firearms policy for their employees but nothing regarding customers.

Now this concept of a "Federal bank", I believe, has misled you. It IS a valid question that I can use a 100% solid answer to, but I gathered (from following a similar question on OpenCarry.Org (I'll find a link)) that the federal part in their name is not actual what you think it means, unless it's on federally leased property. It is not the same type of federal building as say IRS. I shall look this up, and invite all retorts.

It's the fact that banks are insured by the FDIC... Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation... that likely confuses people. Making them think it's federally owned.
Even federal credit unions aren't actually federal unless actually located on federal property. The FDIC credit union located in their main building for instance. Or the Armed Forces bank located ON JBLM.

The relevant RCWs are going to be:

and

(2) Cities, towns, counties, and other municipalities may enact laws and ordinances: ...

(b) Restricting the possession of firearms in any stadium or convention center, operated by a city, town, county, or other municipality, except that such restrictions shall not apply to:

(i) Any pistol in the possession of a person licensed under RCW 9.41.070 (this is the CPL law)

So I'm cornfused. Is this RCW stating that cities and towns CANNOT restrict the right of CPL holders to carry in stadiums or convention centers? Cuz that's certainly not the case at Qwest Field.

Is Qwest Field "operated by a city, town, county, or other municipality", or is it privately operated?

Good point. I'd always considered the stadiums to be operated by Seattle but I guess they are technically privately owned.

If a bank restricted carrying then they would lose most of their commercial customers
I mean are you going to carry yesterday's profits to the bank without a gun?

I wouldn't be caught dead "NOT" carrying in my banks. It is one place in particular that I do prefer to be armed and I do CC into them no matter what the regs might be.

Private property for the duration of the game.

It is bullshit, but it is legal bullshit.
