Was at the range yesterday and a couple of us got to talking about .22LR ammo. One shooter related a recent event he witnessed at Adventure Sports in Lynnwood.
Apparently they had received a few cases of .22LR ammo and had it on display. A guy came in, picked up a bunch, and as he was checking out asked "is there any limit". The response was "no" so the guy responded "I'll take it all. I can flip it for a profit".
The clerk then told the guy "It's guys like you that are causing the supply of this ammo to dry up" and then just proceeded to ring up the sale.
Now for the big question. If someone goes into Adventure Sports to buy a rifle chambered in .22LR, the store owners apparent "greed" pretty much insures that that purchaser better have his own supply of .22LR Ammo or he's going to be out of luck when it comes to shooting it. It's the retailers that are helping fuel the "flipping" craze by not placing at least a reasonable limit on purchases.

If I were the one ringing up the sale and the buyer told me that, I'd say... here is your one box. Don't come back today.

Oh, yeah, that's what we need
more of . . . dealer attitude!
On the other hand, the buyer didn't have to announce his vile intention - he could have just 'stocked up' like any reasonable person might do.

A solution (or how I would do it). Your price for the ammo is $X (reasonable price), when you bring back 500 empty .22 LR cases you can buy another brick of 500.
This way the person who is doing the flipping will have to come up with some empty cases (cleaning up a shooting area/range?) or he will actually be the one shooting them and we can promote recycling the brass!

"OH! In that case I will need to see your business license and get a copy of your W9 before we can proceed with any transaction."
The solution to this whole ammo shortage, and mass buying to flip the product is simple.
Sign-
There will be a $5 surcharge for every box of ammo you buy after the first two, per day.
1 box = $10
2 boxes = $20
3 boxes = $35
4 boxes = $50
5 boxes = $65
.10 boxes = $140
..20 boxes = $290
...30 boxes = $440
We are sorry to take such action, but this is to directly combat people buying mass quantities of ammo just so they can flip it to make money.
We don't commit highway robbery, and we don't think other should either.

In this case he brought it on himself.
If you never slap these people, they will never learn.

Or let him buy it all up and not care.
22LR is coming back. The opportunities for flipping for a profit are quickly dwindling. Let him sit on a few cases for a few years.

I like hearing that stores are no longer putting limits on ammo, and I don't see their willingness to sell all of their stock to one guy as a problem. If a customer walks in and wants to buy every Glock in stock (never-mind why someone would want a Glock in the first place) should they say no you have to leave at least one of each model or caliber in case the next guy wants one?

Adventure sports has put limits on .22lr but when they get a large amount in they do not limit what you can buy.

Apples and Oranges.
Would you be upset if all 45acp pistols were exceptionally hard to get, but the cheapest ammo out there was 45ACP, and a guy walked into to a store and bought every .45 pistol they had on the shelf....and then listed them here for 20-50% higher would you be ok with that?

They can make shitload of gas/oil...whatever.
Just start running a second/third shift......TAKE MY MONE!!!

Agree. The dealer should have gladly and politely rang up the sale and ordered more from his source.

As long as it wasn't illegal, yes. I'm no economist but I'm pretty sure this is just capitalism and free market.

It's still Bullshit. That's why we still have a shortage. In the past two weeks I have not purchased any when the store only had a small supply of single boxes.
Since I have some, I'm not going to be the guy who buy's it all up.....and then someone with none, who just wants to take a kid plinking can't find any.
Yeah, I have been that guy that couldn't take my kids plinking because of hoarders and flipper's....and it sucks.

A dealer is in business to make money. I have been into Adventure Sports many times because they keep a good supply of 1911 spare parts. To be honest, the reason he has a great selection of guns, ammo, reloading supplies etc. is because he usually is at the top end of the price scale. Don't get me wrong, I WILL go back there again when I just gotta have something.
IMHO it's the people who are willing to pay STUPID prices for get .22 (like what this guy will resell) are the reason we have a shortage. Come late fall when people aren't as actively chootin' all their ammo maybe the .22 will start trickling in again.
Even pistol powder is starting to show up... I nabbed 9 pounds of Titegroup for myself while in Montana
