Yeah I learned that even though its not a conventional rifle used for deer hunting the Zastava is short and light enough to lug through even the heaviest of under brush. That and the 10rd mag is so short it doesn't get caught on things and the rifle is so rugged if I drop it a quick field dress would bring it right back to working order. Granted its basic design isn't the best but I was hitting bulls eyes at 100yrds with it and that is plenty for the area's I hunted in.

Now correct me if I am wrong, the 7.62x39 is in the .30 cal range correct? I know the Mosin Nagant is in the .30cal group so I thought I should at least make sure. Shit if the .223 is allowed I can't see why the 7.62x39 isn't.

Before I forget I also had a nagging question. One of the ideas I wanted to do was put a fore grip/bipod on the Zastava, now does that fall under the lights/lasers restrictions or is that legal to use for hunting purposes here?

7.62X39, and 7.62X54R is good for hunting.
.223/5.56 is a no go for hunting in WA (except coyotes, and varmints). If it is a rifle you can put whatever attachments you want to put on. Lights, lasers, bayonets, bi-pods, vertical fore grips, angled fore grips, and whatever else you can think about.

.223 is fine for coyotes, fox, bobcats and cougars. Not allowed on any other big game.
7.62x39 is fine, good to go in anything other than a full auto machine gun.

If the Zastava is assembled as a rifle you are fine with the grip pod. Lights or lasers that project a beam of light upon the target are not allowed for big game. Night vision or thermal are also no bueno. You can hunt coyotes at night with a light, but you cannot do that during elk or deer season, essentially September through November, in any unit that is open to elk or deer hunting. Generally if hunting at night for coyotes, it isn't a bad idea to let WDFW know.

BTW, what is a good place to go for coyotes?

Tenino: source, my own two eyeballs after one killed a couple chickens in broad daylight.

Areas of the Capitol Forest, farmland in the river valleys, some pheasant release sites, wildlife recreation areas, and eastern WA. Calving season is now going over in eastern Washington. Calving season = stupid coyotes.

A grip or bipod is fine because it isn't a light or laser. I suggest stopping by a sporting goods store to pick up the hunters regs. It's free, and you won't have to say "well someone told me online" to a fish and game person. Not that you are getting bad advice here, but rules can change.

Finally bought the muzzle brake for the 91/30 and now I am only two parts away from completing my build. Just need to pick up a Timney Trigger and a bipod
