Recent transplant

Hello everyone, I am a recent transplant from Wisconsin, I moved here just at the end of 2013 and found myself a job and a decent apartment in Lynnwood. When I moved I brought along my small collection of firearms and as far as I knew I was and still in my legal rights to do so. However I realize WA law is different from WI law and I just want to make sure I am legal and not putting myself in a bad position. I have my hunter safety as well as fire arms safety certificates and I believe that I was grandfathered in to a few of the newer regulations.

My collection of fire arms include: PAP Zastava 7.62x39 AK variant, Mosin Nagant 91/30 7.62 x 54R, Springfield XD40, Marlin 22. rimfire and a Remington 870 "Wing Master" 20 gauge. The AK variant is a semi-automatic with a 10rd detachable box magazine, it is 922r compliant and its main purpose was I used it for hunting deer in thick woods and swamps. The Mosin Nagant as of right now is still in its original furniture but I have a bent bolt installed and a scope mount. I am going to be replacing the furniture for the Arch Angel synthetic stock and a 5rd detachable box magazine and also installing a Timney trigger and safety and a muzzle brake. The XD40 just has a light attached. The Marlin is semi automatic and is kept stock as well as the Remington 870 pump action.

I am told AK variants are illegal to hunt with in this state correct?

I also want to know if there is anything I am required to do to legally own and operate these fire arms in this state.

welcome pete

First go get your cpl. nice collection.

As your hunting question you can hunt with an AK. you just need to use the specific caliber mentioned in hunting reg.. on a specific game, EDIT

Just make sure you read the regs. they change

I am no lawyer, but all that sounds perfectly legal to own. Not even sure what a "fire arms safety certificate" is. Here they drawn the line at full auto. You can own a suppressor or SBR with a ATF tax stamp.

Welcome Pete from WI to the state of WA. Nice to have another member from Snohomish County.

For hunting, you can use centerfire .22 or larger for cougar, but all other big game you must have .24 caliber centerfire or larger and the firearm must have a barrel at least 4" in length. There is no restriction on magazine capacity.. predator hunting requires a hunting license and there is no caliber restriction . cannot use a laser sight for hunting.

Actually Jim it is .24 caliber or larger for big game other than cougars, so legal calibers start with the 6MM and .243 rounds on up. Coyotes, bobcats and foxes are fair game with anything.

Welcome Peter!

One of my good buddies is from Wisconsin. You are good to hunt with the AK. Shot a few deer with our SKS. A 10 round mag is a lot handier in the woods than a 30, especially in thick cover.

Like cmica said, strongly recommended that you go get your CPL. http://snohomishcountywa.gov/353/Concealed-Pistol-Licenses

I think you'll like WaGuns...lots of cool people, and great resources!

No mag limits, hunting 6mm or bigger, and open carry with or with out CPL.

Just remember if you OC before you get your CPL, you will need to unload before you get in your car.

as other have mentioned, just get a CPL. Super easy to get, and lets you walk out of the shop that day with a pistol.

Awesome response time! So I don't need to register the firearms here or anything?

Yeah I learned that even though its not a conventional rifle used for deer hunting the Zastava is short and light enough to lug through even the heaviest of under brush. That and the 10rd mag is so short it doesn't get caught on things and the rifle is so rugged if I drop it a quick field dress would bring it right back to working order. Granted its basic design isn't the best but I was hitting bulls eyes at 100yrds with it and that is plenty for the area's I hunted in.

Now correct me if I am wrong, the 7.62x39 is in the .30 cal range correct? I know the Mosin Nagant is in the .30cal group so I thought I should at least make sure. Shit if the .223 is allowed I can't see why the 7.62x39 isn't.

Before I forget I also had a nagging question. One of the ideas I wanted to do was put a fore grip/bipod on the Zastava, now does that fall under the lights/lasers restrictions or is that legal to use for hunting purposes here?

Welcome to WaGuns, Peter!

As already said, you're perfectly legal with all of those. There is no registration in Washington. Yes, 7.62x39 is .30-caliber.

As for hunting . . . I have no clue, I'll leave that to the others!

No registration required, unless you buy or sell something...then it goes to the Department of Licensing (DOL)....at least until we can overturn 594 or get a CPL exemption. For the moment that only is true for handguns, but you never know with the Antis what is up their sleeve.
