.22 ammo shortage

Mon Apr 20, 2015 3:26 pm

So, I'm just about out... I've almost exhausted my stockage of .22LR.

Let's just say I had a lot (but I shoot a lot)... I thought I had more... but... I was wrong.

So I'm down to my last 5,000 or so.

I was fortunate.. back in the day when I was shoot "a lot" I would shoot about 25,000 - 30,000 rounds/year (in .22 alone). So I had a "few" cases and then I slowed down on shooting and there you have my stockage.

So I bought them when they were $0.02-0.04 per round. Now of course they are running like $0.09 - 0.17 per round depending on where/when.

If you could buy .22LR for $0.04 per round ($20 per brick of 500)... how many would you buy (given that it would be unlimited)?

The idea here is not for resale (not for profit). This is for personal use type of deal...

Whenever I see a good deal or "old school" prices I buy it all, but that is just me.

Hell, I'm just now getting up to that level.

Things look different to those of us who got into shooting during the panic.

My wife and I camp and shoot for our vacations so we shoot a lot. Last year we went throug 8000 rounds of 22lr standard and subsonic ammo. That's just 22lr this doesn't include the other rounds. I was lucky to get another 8000 rounds here and there for 7 to 8 cents a round the last 6 months. I am picky about what ammo we use so it's mostly cci. I am always watching for more, but since we want standard, it is not always easy. We don't fly to expensive destinations, so ammo is our biggest expense for our vaction. If I could buy a big lot all at once I would, but we don't hoard, we shoot.

That's a great vacation!!!

Just bought some at Sportmans, for about 6.5 each.

Good luck with this. :thumbsup2:

I'd be up for 10 bricks at least.

We've had .22 at Cabelas for four days straight. There was a guy visiting from IL, and said he bought a FIVE gallon bucket for $100!

Walmart has been getting it at night apparently.

I have a pretty good stock. I limit myself to only buying if there is a good deal to be had. If it is over priced, I leave it. My goal is to have enough so when my son is old enough to shoot I will always have enough. I did sell my 10/22 and bought a bolt action .22 so I would not go through so much ammo. I went from 1000 rounds per range trip to maybe 100.

when i started earlier this year i was buying anything i could. now i am a bit of a snob and won't consider some of the stuff (winchester white box, thunderbolts for example). Have about 6k, not bad for 2 months of sourcing I think plus the 1500-2000 i've shot.

so i guess it would depend on what i was getting in these bricks :)

I have been lucky finding some here and there. I don`t go hog wild and buy the limit each time because I don`t get time to shoot like I used to and have yet to go threw a brick of 22 this year while I have picked up 8k rounds not at 10 cents a round but still not as cheap as before the shortage. Hopefully work chills it`s butt out and I can get out more often

Picked up 2500 rounds today. $65 out the door.
There is no "shortage".
There is "gouging".
Wholesalers and retailers figured out people are willing to pay more.
In turn, they charge more.
This is a pretty simple concept.
Stop making it more than it really is.
