12:17 PM to m1gunr,

I am writing to inquire if you and your interest groups would be willing to meet to discuss recreational shooting on national forest lands and how we, the Forest Service with the help of you, can get the word out on safe shooting practices and caring for the land/area where recreational shooting is taking place? As you know, Highway 410 corridor is an extremely popular area for people to go to shoot. The Forest is getting pressure from a community along the 410 and adjacent to Forest Service lands to close the area to recreational shooting. An individual from the community will be talking with a reporter from the Seattle Times about this issue and we expect an article to be forthcoming. Our position is to try to avoid putting a closure in place, but I need your help!

If you are interested in getting together, please call me (425) 888-8751 or send me an email (mschramm@fs.fed.us) and we can talk about a time and place to meet.

Thank you very much and I hope to hear from you soon!

I've never shot out there off 410. Hiked quite a bit out there in the last few years.

I've been to a few pits now.... and cleaned the North at the last clean up.

So for this to work... everyone that shoots out there needs to meet as a group. It's all about numbers.

One strong point that needs to be pointed out (for the town that has concerns) is all the tourist money they'll lose (money from shooters that come shoot out there - from gas, food, drinks, etc, etc, etc).

So, you'll need a point person to arrange a time/place to meet Martie and be spokeman for media (Seattle Times).

PS I'm not it.

I shoot up there often and every single time I have to tell a group to either move up the firing line or yell at someone that doesn't know what a cease fire means. I'm the one who almost got shot shooting at the main pit a few years back. An empty ammo box was on our shooting table when it was hit and I was a few feet away (haven't shot at that pit since)

The next thing they need to do is fix the gap in the berm on the upper pit. It's my understanding it's the people shooting between that gap that cause all the strays at the main cinder block pit.

They should start with decoy signs saying there are rangers in the area watching in the shadows ready to ticket anyone who leaves garbage (including brass) or who is shooting recklessly. Last thing I would suggest is that the rangers put some sort of dumpster up there (very long shot seeing I don't know who would foot the bill)

My work schedule permitting I'd be more than happy to meet with you and the rangers.

So just to clarify, this is not saying that Greenwater is CURRENTLY closed to recreational shooting? Was planning to go down there this weekend once I pick up the new toys.

I've seen the condition of those pits vary wildly in the 10-12 times I've been there. Once it looked like a cleaning crew had just come through, place was almost spotless. Other times I've seen junk piled high, shot up electronics, ect ect. I live too far away to be a viable part of the negotiations here, but I'm saddened to hear that this is being considered.

that's a big thing to address that upper berm

be nice to get some kind of camera and ticket the shit out of the fuckers doing the littering. Putting a dumpster there will guarantee you one thing assholes and fire.

I quit going up there like 4 yrs ago I don't give a shit no more. more room for quads and bikes

FYI - I was informed after the last cleanup, trail cams have been put in place.
The issue with dumpsters is the aholes who will shoot the thing up or the other aholes who will set it on fire. The trash companies don't like losing equipment.

Not closed YET.... but if the locals keep up the pressure with things like trash & soil samples brought to the attention of the media, it will be soon enough.

Wow, all the work and effort put in less than a month ago and this is the result. As the old saying goes "No good deed goes unpunished." :frust:

Yeah, this was somewhat along my train of thought. Didn't DNR just pat us (and by us, I mean the guys who actually went down there and cleaned) on the back and tell us "atta boy, this will help keep your shooting pit open" just a couple weeks ago?

I don't think it's just about the garbage left up there. The locals that live within bullet range have had a few strays hit their property a while back. Not sure where I read it but I definitely remember reading it. I wonder what their main beef will be if they do talk to the media and who makes the final call on closing access to FR 70

I spend a lot of my time putting up trail cams for almost the same reasons. I like the public to know that there ARE cameras out there watching the popular spots. I just don't want them to know exactly where they are. Then you have a perception there might be more cameras then you actually have and might discourage illegal behavior.

More cameras huh? How about shooters taking more responsibility instead. I don't like the idea of someone spying on me. Increase the ticket fine for littering to a ridiculous amount. And if you see a jerk off leaving a bunch of shit everywhere and/or being unsafe, let them hear it from you then follow through and report their ass. Jesus man! Where's your balls? Always leaving the job to someone else...fucking nanny state mentality.
