Fact:

In about 4 billion years the sun will finish consuming it's material, and expand into a Red Giant star. The red giant will be so large, it will consume the Earth. That will be the final end of the planet.

The only future for the human species is to get off this damn planet.

The reason they are going to Mars (IMHO) is to study it and try to figure out how long we have left on this planet. The Sun is expanding, and signs are pointing to Mars at some point possibly having been a habitable planet, having been killed off due to the Suns expansion over the millennia. The problem is, I think some other natural cause will do us in first, either mega volcano type eruption or asteroid strike. It's happened before, and will continue until the Sun sucks it all in for the final answer.

I was talking to a worker at the Museum of Flight and he was saying a recent theory as to why Mars went dead is the planet's core went cold. This caused the magnetic field to die, which allowed solar wins to carry away the atmosphere of the planet. Earth still has a magnetic field which helps shield Earth's atmosphere from the solar winds. We lose our magnetic shield, prediction is our atmosphere goes with it. Interesting theory, which seems quite logical.
