Route 66 is basically dismembered and lost. But there are contiguous routes that can still be pieced together, and you can get a feel for the way it once was. If you are into that sort of thing, look up historic Auto Trails, here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auto_trail
The original East - West highway, the Lincoln highway still pretty much exists. As does the first North - South the Jefferson Highway. And many others...

I did a bunch of it several years ago in an A/C'd pickup towing an A/C'd travel trailer. Much more comfortable, especially when traveling those parts in New Mexico or across the CA desert.

When I was in high school Route 66 was still Route 66 and the 37 Chev's were only 20 years old. Lots of them were bone stock and were "daily drivers" where I lived. Paint colors kind of ran toward "oxide brown" which in most cases was just a full coating of rust

Darn, I'm starting to feel old. :045:

Reminds me of quite a few towns in central/eastern WA that died off once they were bypassed by I-5. Most have the same general look and feel of pre/post Route 66 towns and resorts.

Last year, the wife and I drove around E. Wa. They only rule we had was stay off the Interstate, while roaming around.

We found some interesting stuff and places. Met real people.

In 2004 I went to San Antonio for Officers Advance Course. I decided to take my 65 Fairlane the long way down Route 66 (at least as much as I could) to get the feel for The Mother Road back then.

My goal one of these days is to take the 62 Thunderbird down it with the wife. That's not her goal but hopefully she will just go along with it.

Wow, times have sure changed. Nothing like Route 66 in a '72 Barracuda in the Summer.
