Does this ring a bell for anyone? :angryfire:

I bought a Roku about four years ago, and I loved it. I kept seeing advertisements for newer Roku models and I ignored them, because mine was doing just fine.

Well, recently there was a sale on the Roku 3 (newest model), and I finally caved and bought it. Yeah, it's faster and has more channels, and it's better in some ways . . . but half the damned time, this is all I can see:

:angryfire: :angryfire: :angryfire: :angryfire: :angryfire: :angryfire:

A quick internet search told me that I'm one of about eleventy brazilian people that have this same fucking problem. Apparently HDCP is a new protocol for HDMI, and it's likely that I'm getting the message because my "old" TV (about four years old) isn't giving the right code word to the Roku, or whatever....

Well, allegedly this splitter will kill the HDCP stuff:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004F9 ... UTF8&psc=1

I received mine today, hooked it up, and YES! I can see video again!

I just fired it up to check it, and haven't given it any serious time yet. If it screws up, I'll post back up . . . but I just wanted to give you guys a heads-up in case any of you are banging your heads on the wall over this same issue.

Just curious, is it specific channels that are sending HDCP signals, or is it random?

It's your TV..

The ROKU basically sends an encrypted (if you can even use that term) signal to the TV, the TV then says 'OK, it's legit, we're good to go', and sends the content.. It's a basic handshake type signal.

Problem is, older TVs don't HAVE the capability to send that signal, so ... no joy..

Stupid thing is, you CAN disable HDCP, and it'll go right through...

Stupidest thing ever...

High bandwidth Digital Content Protection.. Supposed to prevent bootlegging...

riiiggghhtttt....

It happens when I play Amazon and Netflix using the Roku.

Yup, that's what I finally concluded. And it fucking pisses me off that I could be forced to buy a new TV just to get that "functionality." It even pissed me off to spend the $25 for the splitter, but I guess that's reality. :cussing:

By the way, based on the little teensy weensy bit that I know about this clusterfuck, that PARTICULAR splitter will do the trick. I don't know if there are others that will or not, but my understanding is that you can't buy just any splitter.

Can you turn HDCP on/off in the Roku settings?

There's no way this is end user functionality, it's DRM for the content provider to prevent copying of their copyrights. As far as I know there's no way to ever disable it with a setting, as that would defeat the whole point.

The reason the splitter works is because it doesn't forward the HDCP request. It simply tells the originating device that the connection is HDCP encrypted, and then sends a new connection out the two ports on the back without the HDCP request. Due to this processing requirement, there can be some lag if you aren't also using HDMI for audio.

In addition to these little splitters, most home theater receivers have the option to not forward HDCP signals.

My Roku connects via HDMI to the splitter, which connects via HDMI to the TV, which then sends audio to the sound bar.

So I should be good, I assume?
