Panzerkampfwagen VIII Maus super-heavy tank. It was able to penetrate any tank at extremely long distances at its time.

Never really went beyond the prototype stage.

As a combat vehicle it was powerful but very limited. It was slow, too heavy for bridges (relied of fjording rivers) and the engines were not strong enough to move the bulk reliably. They essentially were moving fortifications.

The time and effort spent could have been used in fixes for the PzKw IVs or the PzKw Vs that were doing most of the fighting up until the end of the war. Even the Tiger IIs that scared the hell out of the allies were a waste of resources that could have been used to create more Panzer IVJs or Panthers.

Yup, tactics & training > equipment. Like the Israeli up-gunned Shermans winning against T-55s and T-62s because the Israelis could actually score hits at long range; the Arab tankers in their "better" tanks, by and large, could not.

Don't get me wrong, the German tankers were terrific. But one overly complex Tiger tank, barely able to get out of its own way, was no match for a platoon of Shermans maneuvering to hit its flanks or rear. Now...if only those WWII Shermans had anything like the Super Sherman gun (clearly inspired by the German Panther 75mm), that would have really been something.
