No, really you don't. It's a contest between who screams the loudest, hoping instinct takes control when pulling trigger from the hip hoping safety is off and getting the shot off in kill zone while at the same time your shorts are filling up as she's jumping at you from ten feet away. Great campfire story now that I've lived through it, don't want to do it again....... "I do not think that means what you think it means."

Until recently I carried a 4" Taurus 627, 7-shot .357 with 180 gr HC bullets in a belt slide holster when hiking/hunting. Sold that to my son when I bought the 6.5" Raging Bull in 454 with a Leupold Gilmore red dot. So now it will be my S&W 637 w/crimson trace during the summer, 454 with optics during hunting (bear/deer/elk) season, and take the optic off if hiking in bear country (after elk season). Shooting it with the weight of the optics makes the recoil of the 454 less but it's a pain to carry.

Yes, my shorts will be filling up, as she jumps me. My safety will be off while going for the kill zone.

Here's one man who elected for the 10mm GLOCK with favorable results (he has since decided he needs heavier 10mm bullets) https://www.alloutdoor.com/2018/09/14/g ... NewsletterHere's a nice detail from the story: "Although the bear was dead, its teeth were still hopelessly tangled in Bridger’s calf muscle. When rescue personnel arrived — quickly, thanks to his family’s close proximity at the time of the attack — they struggled and failed to free the meat from the fangs. Only after cutting the bear’s head off with a pocket knife could they transport Bridger and his now-gray leg muscle."

That story is intense, very glad that guy made it out alive to tell the story. As for a sidearm when hiking...right now the best one i have is my 4" barrel model 19-3, although i would prefer something lighter. But after reading that story im going to consider getting a glock 20.

OWB XDM 9mm. Although thinking of upgrading to a larger caliber. When I got the gun it was for 2 legged animals. We also hike with our Ridgeback, and she creates a wide birth between 2 and 4 legged creatures.

Nice revival story Jim. Had me on the edge of my seat. Reminded me of the legendary mountain man Jim Bridger. I actually read the entire piece! (only took me two hours). Thanks for sharing that one.
