Bear bells on each of the boys' packs, and Lily, also with a bear bell on her pack.

I don't hike as much as I'd like to now that the boys are older and have "stuff to do", but yah, I should probably be carrying something. Not that it would do any good against a cougar--those MF's are on you before you can even scream--but that's where Lily comes in. She ran off a curious black bear and has run off more coyotes than I can remember--she sort of has this thing about predators. Lily would buy me enough time to react appropriately.

Bear bells are for letting the bears know dinner is on the way.

Hot Potato! "You shoot him!" "No, YOU shoot him..." "no, You".... "argggh"

Guide and his client are packing out an elk and encounter two bears with tragic results.

Lesson: When prancing about the back country dressed as walking h'ourderves, have your firearm immediately accessable... and be prepared to use it.
