A Pasco man arrested in Kennewick late Monday on suspicion of illegally possessing a gun said he had the pistol to protect his family, police said.
Kennewick officers at 11:55 p.m. responded to a report of a wanted person in the 3400 block of West Hood Avenue and found two men and a teen girl in a gray Infiniti matching the description in the report, police said.
One man was released, but police arrested Augustin Meraz-Gutierrez, 28, of Pasco, when they found he had a pistol concealed in his waistband.
Meraz-Gutierrez is a convicted felon and resident alien and is restricted from possessing firearms, police said.
He reportedly told officers he had the gun to protect his family
and get revenge for a robbery last week, police said.
It wasn't clear what robbery Meraz-Gutierrez was talking about. Kennewick police did investigate a robbery and assault at the same apartment complex May 4, but it doesn't appear Meraz-Gutierrez had any connection to that incident based on police and court documents.
The 15-year-old Pasco girl with Meraz-Gutierrez was arrested on probation violation warrants and taken to the juvenile justice center.
