I have to spend $60 for a class here, and then pay about $100 for a five year licence.

I had yesterday off, so I called Burien PD (who partners with King County Sheriff) to see if I could come in to do my CPL renewal. "Oh, the lady who does that isn't here, call back at 3:00." I called back at 3:05, "still not here, call in half hour." I called again at 3:45, "she's away from her desk, call back in ten minutes." I called back at 3:55, the right lady answered, and I asked if I could come in since I knew they were open until 5:00 and it would take me half hour to get there. "Sorry, it's too late to do it today." I explained that I had the day off and it would really be convenient for me if I could do it . . . but nope. No sympathy. She offered me an appointment the next day (i.e., today) at noon. I asked if it could be later. "The latest appointment we do is 4:00." OK, fine, fuck it I'll just leave work early I guess. I showed up at 3:52 today, wham bam thank you ma'am, and I was walking back to my car at 4:00. Pretty damn easy. It PISSES ME OFF that we need to do this fucking appointment dance. Yes, I know I could have gone to downtown Seattle without an appointment, but fuck that for many different reasons. I could easily have been at her desk at 4:30 yesterday, done by 4:38, and she'd have still had 22 minutes until her day was over. I wish I could tell people at my work, "sorry, you need to make an appointment and I'm full up for today." Now I guess I want to see how many days it takes to get my CPL, and if they break state law . . . .

I went to the king county place in maple valley, right across from the firehouse. They need appointments for new applications, but renewal is walk-in. They had the forms ready and an instruction card, super easy process.

I went to Edmonds PD on Thursday for my renewal. Took me all of 5 minutes, and a pleasant (and easy on the eyes) woman told me "We'll have that out to you within the next 30 days." I sure hope so - that's the law, after all.

Submitted the application on 7/12 and it was in my mailbox on 7/23. Nice work, Edmonds PD!

If you renew early, do you get to keep your old card, as long as it's valid, while you wait for the renewal to show up? Mine expires in November.

Since I was all ready to send off a pissy email to King County Sheriff about it coming late . . . I thought it was right to send a "thank you" email for getting it done so quickly, so I did.
