I know the answer to my pending question is "drugs" and I really hope that some kids will learn that drugs are just so terrible for them.

I just do not understand how someone could be depressed to the point of suicide when they have literally achieved professional success and are at the immortalized pinnacle of their careers, the prime of life, and have everything a person could want.

I know that may not be the key to happiness, but surely they could hire the right people (doctors, psychologists, whatever) to help them get through these hard times. Access to help when you are poor... okay, sure, maybe not. But he's gotta be worth $10 million. Pretty much any resource for help, getting clean, hell, go buy and island and retire and enjoy a stress free life.

And, if you know how badly you are impacted by a family member or buddy doing it, then why would you do it knowing the pain it causes everyone else??

Makes no sense at all. Drugs I suppose. But man... I can't wrap my non-drugged brain around it.

In their state of depression they were not thinking clearly and just didn't give a fuck anymore.

I saw Linking Park back in 2001 in Spokane, and in Billings in 2004. Both were great small venue shows. Too bad to this happened. But same can be said for anyone who decides to take their own life. It's not the way to go.

Rockstar burnout.

Some can party hard and get out, some party hard and never leave.

He went through horrific child abuse as a kid. That and his depression is what led him to drugs.

I've dealt with suicidal folks. The depression is such a fog, they just want it to go away.

Nothing is fun. And when they are around people, they feel like they are in the way and bringing others down.

They just want it to stop.

Think about genuine depression (not the "I'm not getting my way so I'll do something awful to myself for attention" variety) kind of like diabetes. Neither is a presence in your life because you want it to be. You can try to manage the condition with lifestyle choices and medication but, deep down, you still have diabetes. If the meds don't work, or if their side effects are so bad that people don't want to take them, then sometimes the medical condition gets the upper hand. With diabetes that might mean the patient loses a foot because of diminished circulation. With depression it sometimes means suicide.

You can't wish yourself out depression, just like you can't wish yourself out of diabetes or cancer or any other medical condition. Genuine depression has almost nothing to do with being happy or well adjusted. In fact, having a lot of money might actually make the patient's situation worse because they're thinking, I'm so fucked up I can't even be happy when I'm rich and famous. The chemical mix in their brain clouds and skews their view of the world, the same way diabetes makes sufferers thirsty or fatigued. Telling a diabetic that they aren't thirsty doesn't quench their thirst. Telling someone who's depressed that they should be happy because their life is awesome doesn't make it so.

It's hard to not see depression as a conscious choice, but it's really more akin to a disease, an affliction.
