What happens when you bag a bear?

Thu Jul 20, 2017 8:52 pm

Speaking specifically about snohomish county.

Say you get a tag.

You bag a bear.

What happens next?

I mean, to comply with regulations.

Attach the tag? Do you have to call someone? Take the bear somewhere? Wait for a ranger? What happens???

It's been awhile, but August 1 used to be the eastside bear opener, westside didn't open til Sept 1. May have changed since the last bear I shot (with columbus), but better check.

Hmm, interesting. Any reason why they ask for that? What information are they trying to collect?

Wildlife management.
Teeth probably age and sex, maybe more info related to tooth wear, discoloration.
Tissue sample....probably DNA to track migration, see if they are related to other bears around the state,
Hair:
The quantification of reproductive hormones in the hair of captive adult brown bears and their application as indicators of sex and reproductive state
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5452076/

It's a lot easier for the biologists to have the hunter bring it in rather than having to tranquilize bears to pull a tooth.
