"smart" gun hacked by $15 magnet

Among other approaches, one of the first generation of "smart guns" has been hacked by a $15 magnet.

This is a good article, check it out.

The manufacturer, predictably, is attempting to downplay this. However these findings justify fears that gun owners have about complicated electronic platforms that are prone to failure or sabotage.

I dunno about first generation.
They've had various firearm enabling systems since the 70's.

Originally it was a ring with a magnet, then with 4 magnets of alternating polarity that mated with reeds inside the grip.
Nobody liked it.
I can't believe any officer or police union would ever agree to it.

They didn't. Their hypocrisy was big news at the time. The states and localities that mandated smart guns all included exemptions for police under those laws, because the police objected that the technology was unreliable.
