Chaos erupted Tuesday at a Baltimore City Hall hearing for a proposed mandatory one-year sentence for possession of an illegal handgun.

It took just minutes for rising tensions to overflow.

Council members had issued several warnings to unruly attendees, but police were called to move in as activists clashed with council members, and people pushed back.

Under the amended version of the bill, a mandatory minimum sentence would only apply to second offenses, except for first time offenders whose gun violation was committed along with another crime.

“Over 600 shootings in less than a year in our city and something has to give,” Catherine Pugh says. “And so we are trying to protect the citizens of our city and make sure that we curb the violence in our city.”

Opponents argue adding a minimum mandatory one-year jail sentence for illegal gun possession unfairly targets young men of color.

"We cannot arrest our way out of this situation," said Genevieve Wilson, an educator.

It's just insane. Liberals support criminals, and hate/want to punish law abiding citizens.

So, what they're saying is, 'young men of color' are carrying illegal guns more than anyone else, and it's not 'fair' to target them....

Because we should apply law based on race.... but only if it's in favor of minorities..... Makes sense... wouldn't wanna make anyone upset....and, you know, apply law EQUALLY....

When I think about Baltimore....3 years ago six "young people", "students" pulled up with guns and robbed an entire tour group at gunpoint at a bus stop while they were waiting for their bus.
Officials were shocked because it happened around lunchtime in the business district.

Maybe I'll binge watch The Wire again.

It would.

What they are upset about is that it would affect everyone equally. And since young men of color are overwhelmingly represented as offenders, they equate that to unfair targeting of young men of color.

I am opposed to any new gun laws, and most of the old ones. Possessing a Tool of Freedom (Tool of Self Defense) should not be cause for extra minimum sentencing. The laws already cover crimes.
Was it stolen? Added time for theft or knowingly possessing stolen property.
Was it used in a crime? ad infinitum

I am always suspicious of news stories, no matter what the source. Some of the comments almost seem Onionesque in their silliness.
Of course, truth is stranger than fiction quite a lot, and there are unreasonable jack holes in every group.
