Our reality in the NW is skewed big time. Spend time in the deep south and you will understand that racism still exists. It was an eye opener for me, I have never witnesses anything close to that up here.
What gets me is when the race card is pulled and the reality is the asshole was treated like an asshole because he was an asshole, not because he was black or brown or yellow or whatever. For the record I have been mistreated by the police on more than one occasion.
on the flip side I got a warning for speeding last year and as the cop walked away he said "nice hat" (was wearing my WAGuns hat)
The commercial does drive home a point though. Bullying, racism, sexism, just makes you have to work harder and be better to be successful, which in a way is the best payback.

We obviously haven't made much progress when progressive liberal names like Woodrow Wilson and Franklin Roosevelt are still all over schools, bridges, hospitals, roads, etc. Heck, many people around Seattle venerate those racists.

I'm the oldest of 6, and four of my brothers and sisters are Black & Puerto Rican. While growing up, we got stares and negative comments thrown our way many people of all races, but most of which were black women for some reason. It was almost like my Mom being a white lady, who took 4 foster kids under her wing when they were babies, and who didn't get a penny from the .GOV was not worthy of raising them.
Racism is all over and all across the board and sadly I don't think it will ever change.

Is it always just beneath the surface even in times of peace? Are we so tribal in nature that anything that sets off tensions makes us divide up, and what "easier" way is there than the instant segregation by outward appearance?

I think regardless of where we will go in terms of "race relations" moving forward there will always be the underlying issues on all sides based off personal experiences or stories told by others. For instance, back in my Senior year of HS ('97) I met this smoking' hot black chick at Alki and we swapped numbers and decided to go on a date after several calls. I went by her house, knocked on her door and her Pops answered. He opened the door, looked at me right in the face and asked "what do you want"? I told him I was there to pick up Tanya and he laughed and said "the fuck you are white boy" and slammed the door in my face. That was the end of that relationship I grew up in a very multi-cultural area, and was the minority in my neighborhood growing up. That was just normal to me, but was far from the average "white boy" upbringing.

Watch a few prison documentaries. They split up into gangs by race upon entry. You my have friends of a different race, but your ultimate loyalty is to your own race while serving hard time there. Just another example.

I was in Georgia and South Carolina last year, didn't see any racism. All the people there seemed really friendly regardless of color. But then we didn't go looking for it in small towns in Alabama or Mississippi.
