This isn't a story, but a tip, after reading LC & others dining tricks....

Don't meet for a meal, per se, meet for drinks.

Pick a nice restaurant that also has a nice bar. Make a reservation for the restaurant at, like 8:00.

Meet the date in the bar at 7:00 and have a drink and talk. After 45 mins or so you at least know if you want to keep talking, so then you ask if they'd like to get something to eat. If they say yes, then you know they are still interested, too, and say great, I have a res for us for 8:00.

If you choose to not ask them to stay, or they decline the offer for a bite to eat, you've wasted a lot less time and money than a two hour meal. Plus, with a drink or two down, the pretense is less....

And if it's marginal, order appetizers and cancel your res on the way to the men's room....
