Not exactly. The theater-level THAAD system designed to knock down short range missiles and IRBM (intermediate range) has been used pretty successfully in tests. So there are effective systems against theater based missile threats.

Our capability to knock down ICBM threads using the interceptors at Fort Greeley, AK and Vandenberg AFB, CA has not been anywhere near as successful with a success rate of 55% intercepting a single incoming warhead at a time. And that is pretty optimistic as the following article indicates:

Incoming missiles are likely to arrive at least several at a time with active decoys in orbit. Relying on missile defense is like playing Russian roulette with four cylinders loaded.

Here's what we know for sure:

1) They absolutely hate us, and threaten us with destruction.
2) They are actively developing missiles that can reach us, and nuclear warheads that can ride on this missiles.
3) Their leadership is absolutely fucking bonkers, and shows no sign of any rational thinking.

Therefore, I think it's a very reasonable assumption that they WILL attack us when they have the capability.

The only reasonable approach is to conduct a sudden, massive strike on their military facilities. Hopefully we can keep the whole thing non-nuclear, get it done quickly and help the North Korean citizens get on with life.

Yeah I'd echo what MadPick said about The Fat One being totally irrational. A thinking person would realize that there are at least two SSBN boats on patrol in the Western Pacific at any one time. Each Ohio class boat has 24 missile tubes. Each Trident II D5 missile sports 4 or 5 independently targetable re-entry vehicles for an approximate total of 120 independent warheads per boat.

Recent developments in missile technology, deployed in the Pacific since 2009, have substantially improved the ability of the SSBN fleet to destroy hardened targets like ICBM silos or buried underground command centers using a recently developed adjustable burst height compensating super-fuze. Basically detects discrepancies on the terminal ballistics of the warhead and makes adjustments for intentional overshoot or undershoot to keep the warhead on target for optimum lethality to buried targets:

I've got some normal thoughts and some weird thoughts on this one.
First the normal. I don't think he is as irrational as he puffs up to be. He's a bully punk dictator, but he sure knows the result of an actual shooting way. (Or does he? Maybe he is counting on a repeat of Vietnam with China's proximity.)
We canNOT count on even 50% success on the ICBM shooting range. If I were to hazard a SWAG number, I'd guess about a 10% to 25% success. No bueno, even when the targets are LA and Seattle.

Now the odd thought... Who the hell are we to tell a bully punk dictator whether he can have nukes or not? Do I want him to have them? 'Course not. I'd nuke him.
But we operate under the guise of "the Good Guys" and claim the right to police against governments that we don't like. What is with this nuclear club? Sometimes it feels far more like a bully's club.

The thing about North Korea is that they are so isolated and brainwashed that they truly think we are an enemy. I watched a documentary several years ago about a guy who escaped and the stories he told were absolutely bat shit crazy on how they are bred to hate us. Almost like the little ISIS fuckstains.

Who are we? People scared of losing 5-10 million from a nutjob.
It's less about World Police and more about nukes are dangerous and even if nutty regimes won't use them, they could easily lose control of them. That is the extreme danger in letting Pakistan keep them. If Iran gets them, given how fractious their government is there is a 75% chance a terrorist proxy of theirs (like hezbollah) will get a hold of one or more.


We had to do that because it was the first time they were offensively used (and Japan refused to surrender prior to it) and it forestalled a ground invasion against a fanatical warrior population that would have cost us millions of lives and fought to the death over every square inch of soil.

Iran is quietly celebrating that the heat is off of them while they stockpile much more sophisticated devices that NK doesn't have yet.

This idea bothers me, too . . . not just with NK but with other countries too. But in this case, he has made very direct threats to the United States and made his intentions known to all, so I think that justifies action on our part.
