Your experience is very different from mine. Where I'm from, most people fly that flag because they prefer more conservative values (primarily: live and let live) than the increasingly liberal BS the WA administration is stuffing down our throats. The majority of them have never been to the South, some haven't even been outside this state. They and their families had nothing to do with the oppression, segregation, or slavery that was part of the US's history. I know that because their families weren't even in this country when the Confederate flag as we know it now was adopted. I'm not discounting the power of any flag's symbolism. However, if someone chooses to believe something about me because of a flag in my yard, that's kind of their problem, isn't it? To that I would say, my suggestion is that those people find a different flag to fly instead of flying a flag while being ignorant of or disregarding it's origin. Casting a different idea to what the flag represents doesn't change what it largely represents. It surely does not represent Where I'm from if you're scene flying that flag some people believe that you are a bigot. Often it was very easy to tell without the flag. Part of their core beliefs is that oppression, segregation, and slavery is just fine. That's fine. What does it mean for you? Have you been able to trace your heritage to the Confederacy? I'm not offended and I agree with you. It's hard for people to understand a symbol or anything else that's culturally relevant when they have not lived with it. What geographic are you referring to? As for me, I lived with it for 30 years in the south.[/quote] Sorry for the delay ladies & gents, life happened. I come from a long line of mitary heritage starting with WWI. I have heard my grandfather talking with elders at our family reunions many years ago mentioning the families involvement in the Civil War (from both sides) but no recollections of any concrete details. I was a kid back then with an attention span no longer than my nose. To me, I know that Southern pride is something that few people will never understand unless of course, they have lived it. I'll fly it proudly & those (city folk) can pound sand if they a don't like it none. Respectively

If I fly the Canadian flag, everybody thinks I am a maple syrup retailer, or a Red Robins donut shop.
They do get all pissed off when they find out I am neither.

The swastika didn't begin life as a Nazi construct, yet that's all it's affiliated with nowadays. Everyone has disregarded its origin. The contemporary symbolism of the Confederate flag may be evolving, too, especially among those who weren't exposed to its earlier incarnations. Hell, this society can't even seem to agree on what the US flag means anymore. If public education in the last 30 years would have taught American history like it was taught in the 60's then there would be no friggin doubt in anyone's mind what was what. And yes the Confederate flag has gone the way of the swastika to full hatred by the ignorant.
