Not like there is a shortage of magma. Went from 4 sq miles to 8 sq miles in a week. This thing could be erupting and spewing out noxious gas and lava for the next 100 years engulfing the entire island.......................... We have volcanoes on the mainland, but people don't generally live on them. https://www.forbes.com/sites/ericmack/2 ... -coastlineHawaii's Kilauea Volcano continues to reshape the Big Island with an unceasing flow of lava in the Eastern Rift Zone that has destroyed hundreds of structures and recently erased the island's largest lake. Flows of lava march all the way down to the Pacific Ocean where they are currently filling in Kapoho Bay and remaking the coastline.Meanwhile, at the volcano's summit, located inland in the heart of Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, earthquake activity has been intensifying in recent days, including a 5.5 magnitude temblor Monday and a 5.6 magnitude early Tuesday. The Hawaii County Civil Defense Authority reports there is no threat of a tsunami from the earthquakes as of Tuesday morning, however roads and buildings in the National Park have been damaged by the quakes.

If I was a geologist, I'd be fucking giddy as hell... I'm NOT a geologist and find shit like this absolutely fascinating....You always read about changes that take millions of years or 'this is how it was back then' and you're talking about changes that are currently changing landscapes, and within a couple years, will look like 'it's always been that way'....
Fucking beautiful, in a weird, sciency way....

Said 250 buildings burned up last night alone and one fissure is blowing lava and large rocks a couple hundred feet in the air. I'd make sure my home owners insurance was paid up, gather up grandma's ashes, and leave the island for awhile before it blows.

I would doubt any insurance company would sell homeowners on an active volcano and Kilauea has been continuously erupting since 1983,....If they did it would be VERY expensive.

Plenty of insurance companies provide insurance to the residents there. But like a lot of policies elsewhere in "geologic activity areas" (I made that up I have no idea what its really called) they have exceptions for different things. A lot of policies might exclude lava damage. Kind of like earthquake damage is often not covered. It does get a bit harder there since some houses are just burning down from fires so its a matter of how the policy agent deems it. Since the fire was started by lava (in most cases) they can deny claims based on that. We were actually there before it really "blew". Around the 8-16 fissures time frame. It was interesting watching the news there as there was really little fear or worry. Most of it was about people trying to get back in to recover more possessions. That and getting a hazardous material out of the geo thermal plant. But they did have some fun, the news would show clips from the mainland and basically make fun of the reporters for having no clue what they were talking about.

I see a great marketing strategy arising... make a new coffee line and call it Leilani Roast, or Kapoho roast. Kilauea roast would just be too much...

They have a map they give you when you look at property that defines the lava zones. This area is lava zone 1. All the locals/natives left a long time ago and newcomers snapped up the land because it was dirt cheap. They literally call the area the Wild West because a lot of "undesirables" live there. If this volcano erupts long enough it might not be long before it's just "The Hawaiian Island" on maps.

Don't think I'd be building a house there anytime soon. Tour boat just had a big chunk of lava crashing through their roof. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/201 ... g-touristsLava from the Kilauea volcano has added nearly 700 acres to Hawaii's Big Island https://www.cbsnews.com/news/kilauea-vo ... coastline/
