I believe so. Lava explodes sometimes when it hits the sea. They said there was a limit of how close you can go in a boat, but some boats have a special permit so they can get closer.
When Krakatoa erupted in the late 1800's it was heard over 2,000 miles away, equivalent of 200 Megatons. Sent 6 cubic miles of rock in the air. And this one in Hawaii could be going for hundreds of years.

Actually a recording of the actual sound of the 1883 Krakatoa explosion on YouTube of all places:
They say that the explosion in the Sunda Strait was heard in the Australian Outback All the atmospheric ejecta affected weather patterns worldwide for several years.
There was nothing left of the original island in 1883 after the eruption except a single fragment of rock above the ocean surface. Anak Krakatau is a resurgent island in the old caldera and is highly active.

The 1883 Krakatau eruption culminated in a cataclysmic explosion. This explosion threw 12 cubic km of material into the air. When it collapsed back into the Sunda Strait, it displaced so much ocean water that it blew a portion of the Sunda Strait dry to the ocean bottom for up to 30 minutes. The resulting tsunami killed up to 30,000 people in Java and Sumatra.
Interesting analysis on the final pyroclastic collapse and resulting tsunami:
