"Mess" really doesn't even begin to describe it. Decades of feckless border enforcement have finally caught up with us. The Trump administration is doing everything right, though; they're sending a message that catch-and-release is over and that all border-jumpers will be prosecuted, and that the onus is on Congress to overhaul the system. Until the laws change, though, they're going to enforce them as they are written. This executive order he's signing today is not constitutional, as it violates existing law. Of course, the administration knows that, and they're only doing it to ease the tension until Congress can actually do their damn job. In other words, by the time a court actually ruled the EO unconstitutional (if someone were to file a lawsuit), the law may have already been changed, and the EO can be revoked.
The Republicans bear a lot of responsibility for the current situation getting as bad as it has, but the reality is they lack a sufficient majority to fix the system without the Democrats' help. As was mentioned before, the Democrats don't actually want to fix immigration; they prefer to use the chaos as a political weapon against the Republicans. Well, it's possible that approach is losing effectiveness, and I believe the Democrats are very scared about their midterm prospects. But the media sure is helping provide a shitload of cover, like they always do. Notice how there has been very little talk of the FBI hearings on Capitol Hill? This border story has been dominating the coverage. I think it shows how desperate the Left is to get people out to vote. But that means we need to get out and vote, too.
you jinxed it!

Washington Attorney General Bob Ferguson made the announcement Thursday outside a federal prison in the city of SeaTac, south of Seattle, where about 200 immigration detainees have been transferred. The detainees include dozens of women separated from their children under the administration's "zero tolerance" policy, which calls for prosecuting all migrants caught illegally entering the country.
Ferguson said the separations violate the due process rights of children and their parents and that President Donald Trump's executive order Wednesday halting the practice has not resolved the legal concerns.
"This is a rogue, cruel, and unconstitutional policy," Ferguson said. "We're going to put a stop to it."
The lawsuit would be filed in the U.S. District Court in Seattle.
The states set to join Ferguson's lawsuit are Massachusetts, California, Maryland, Oregon, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Minnesota. New York has separately announced plans to sue.
