I'm leaving Monday to sail a boat back from Hawaii.
Last time I made the crossing (in the other direction) we had some fishing gear and caught a tuna. It was one of the other guys that brought the gear and I can't remember the specifics.
I know we used a 9" long squid jig like this:
https://www.b2squid.com/product/r9j8-1-pack-9-b2-squid-with-8-oz-jig-80-hook/I know we had a rubber snubber on a nylon line then a monofilament leader. We just drug it off the back of the boat while sailing around 7 knots.
What I'm not sure about is how long and what size the leader and line were. Any recommendations?

That link is for bluefin off the east coast.
For Pacific fishing it would be unlikely you will catch anything over 100 pounds.
You are going to want to go heavier than you think you need though. Especially for trolling. Spool you reel with 80-120# braid. Leader is more depending on the size of fish you are getting into. 80-300# mono or florocarbon.
Lures for trolling vary quite a bit. Ask any tackle shop in Hawaii and they can help you out.

That sounds like quite the adventure Scott, i can't wait to hear the stories from the trip.

My brother and some friends were hired to take a new boat from Los Angeles to somewhere in Mexico.
Didn't hear back from him for awhile but figured he was busy working.
Turns out the boat broke down and he was floating around the ocean for almost three months before they were rescued.

Drop into POP Fishing & Marine down by Pier 38, right next to the Honolulu Fish Auction. They'll point you in the right direction. And while you're there, grab lunch at Nico's.
If you've never been to the fish auction, it's worth a trip...you just have to get up pretty early to make it. I could even put you in touch with my coworker who is down there buying fish every day - he'd give you a quick tour.
Does the sailboat trip have anything to do with the Pacific Cup? My dad is sailing that pretty soon here (SF to Hawaii), and he was asking me about fishing for mahimahi and tuna on his way there.

It's not part of Pac Cup I do have some friends doing that though.
My friend bought the boat last year and plans to do a Vic-Maui race in two years.
I went to Cabela's this morning and picked up a handful of squid jigs in the 9" range and some 200lb leader line. Also picked up a small spool of braided line that will be easier to pull in by hand and some bungee cord at Lowe's to act as a shock absorber.
I got some weights but I'm not sure if I need them or not. I suppose it depends how fast we are moving. Some acticles say you want the lure on the surface, others say to put it down where the fish are.
My plan is to drag two lines off the back, one on each side. I'll have plenty of time to experiment with different setups.

I hope you take a satellite based SOS beacon.

EPIRB - check
It bugs me a little that the boat doesn’t have AIS
This is what I’ve got so far:

Need to figure out how long to make the monofilament leaders. The grey line is 180’. I think I’ll leave it full length right now. Some say to go up to 4x the boat length to get the jigs away from the wake (that would be 200’). Others say to keep it closer because fish will feed in the wake. I’ll just have to experiment.

you'll get ono, ahi and bluefin using a polu kai ( many varieties of em shaka is the eye looking one you'll like). , similar to the squid you have. troll around 5-8 if you got out riggers let em splash at the surface
