Online sales have killed certain types of small businesses and given life to others. Smaller brick and morters that refused to adapt to online sales suffered. I know of a few hardware stores that were struggling are now doing great because they have a bigger audience. I personally have been able to recoup some cost by selling leftover car parts. I could make 500 a month on eBay alone. That is huge for a small time mechanic shop. I also saw a few people that were not able to run a storefront due to overhead and physical disabilities are now able to make a living out of their garage. Time will tell how this tax will effect people. But I am rarely for giving our government more money to waste.

What’s to stop people from shipping to relatives in Oregon and having them ship it up to Washington? Or set up a drop shipper in states that have no sales tax?

Depends on what you are buying.

Customer of mine goes down to Oregon every few months for fishing and to visit his parents, has an OR DL.
He has been known to buy stuff for people and bring it back with no sales tax.
Saved one of the guys a couple hundred bucks on a kayak.

Oh, tip on going to Oregon?
Save up all of your beer and soda cans.
Worth 5 cents each down there, can pay for the trip.

Last time we stayed in Vancouver BC we were kept awake by the sound of bums rummaging through the dumpsters looking for cans and bottles.
The next morning we passed a liquor store, had about 30-40 bums sleeping in front of it waiting for them to open so they could return trash bags full of cans.
Place is crawling with bums and junkies. Hepatitis and Syphilis Capitol of North America.

You must have stayed near Hastings and main. It has the highest crime per capita in North America. Yet 3 blocks away is yaletown where 2 million gets you a studio apartment
