NK returning KIA/POW remains....

Sun Jun 24, 2018 11:20 pm

Anyone else floored by this?

Link

It seems like such a huge step.

Some people will say 'meh, they're just turning over bodies' but, returning remains to 'home' is deeply symbolic in every culture I know of....

Is this the beginning of a lasting peace?

Something about this image....I can't place it... Mutual respect maybe?

An 'enemy' showing respect for the dead of their 'enemy'...

It's definitely an encouraging sign. The real test would be whether we can form a lasting agreement for North Korea to admit entry for US teams with the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command in Hawaii to investigate leads and excavate former battle and aircraft crash sites in North Korea for further remains.

The website indicates there are still 7699 missing service members from the Korean War. Hopefully over time we can reach an agreement with North Korea to search for their remains, similar to what has been happening in Vietnam and Laos for many years now.

A friend of mine led a team recovering remains in Viet Nam.
Said it was the most satisfying duty in his entire Army career.

That is awesome!!! I can only imagine that the successful repatriation of a loved one's remains can only help to bring closure and a sense of peace to their remaining family members back home. Your friend must have felt a great amount of pride that he could bring some of our fallen heroes home to their families.

He went into the Army around 1981 as an enlisted man and retired as a Major.
He was in Iraq and Afghanistan a few years ago as a civilian contractor, doing pretty much the same thing; recovering remains.
Think he had a degree in archeology, someone wrote an entire chapter about him in a book. I'll see if I can find the article. Had pics of him and some of his men in a mass grave with those wire boxes sorting through the remains of US soldiers in Viet Nam.

Hope this doesn’t start a trend. I have a Korean War bring-back I’d hate to lose...
