Re: Where in the world is Rocket Scott?

After the rigging failed we dropped the headsail. I left the head in the track so we could put it back up if need be. The flapping around turned out to be too much for it. It snapped about 6” up.

So there I was. 1000 miles from land. Sitting on the pulpit at the front of the boat with a hacksaw, razor knife, and drill bit refitting the metal ferrule to the end of the now shortened track (all while pounding through waves). The only drill bit we had was a 3/4” spade bit. I used the center point to ream the hole out by hand.

This tuff luff should have been replaced before the trip. They have two grooves for holding the sail. One was completely blown out and wouldn’t hold the sail at all. The other was better but the head kept coming out till I added some extra layers of tape to the bolt rope.

Note the gap behind the metal strap. That wasn’t there when we started.

Also note the track torn off the side. That was the berth I was sleeping in. I was sitting there when we hit a wave and all the pop rivets sheared off. That’s the end my feet were at so it wasn’t a huge deal. Just icing on the cake.

I agree. The owner had a survey done before the sale went through.

Looking back I should have asked to see a copy and not just taken his word that “everything looked great”

Hate to pour salt in the wound but that boat WAS NOT SEA WORTHY! Not even in Puget Sound.

If done correctly the strap anchor should be stainless steel but I should shut up since Santa Cruz boats are foreign to me and I'm not there. The luff is aluminum.

That’s a good description of the BOD and the forces involved. This boat doesn’t have a BOD, the I-beam runs fore and aft. The flat piece that went under the beam was aluminum.

The tuff luff is carbon composite of some sort.

This boat is a great downwind sled. The interior is super lightly built. 1/2” plywood bulkheads, everything else is 3/8”.

Are you going for round 2 or flying back in an aluminum tube with jet engines held on with 8~10 bolts per engine?

Got a one way ticket for an aero plane...

Not sure if the owner is going to try again. Looks likely that he will put it on a container ship to Seattle.

Thanks for that after action report!
A lot of the language I had no idea what it was, but I got the gist of it.

I call stuff like this 'life experience'.... Yeah, it sucks when you're in it, but afterwards you learn from it, realize you did what yo had to do, made makeshift tools/fixes, and 'made it happen'... Makes a far better experience than 'we made it with no problems', IMO.
