Hawaii becomes 1st state to ban MOST sunscreens

They should ban lava spewing volcanoes, that seems to be a larger problem these days.

Hawaii just became the first state to ban certain sunscreens as a measure to protect the state's essential coral reefs.

Hawaii Gov. David Ige signed a bill on Tuesday, July 3, banning the sale of sunscreens containing two chemicals, oxybenzone and octinoxate, believed to harm coral reefs and other marine ecosystems.

State lawmakers passed the legislation in early May. Senate Bill 2571 prohibits the sale and distribution of non-prescribed sunscreens on the islands that contain oxybenzone or octinoxate, which can be deadly for coral larvae.

The chemicals oxybenzone and octinoxate are used in more than 3,500 of the world's most popular sunscreen products, including Hawaiian Tropic, Coppertone and Banana Boat.

Good riddance! We have been using reef safe sunscreen for a few years now.

Never knew there was such a thing.
But I usually wait to put on sunscreen until I burn my bald head.

That seems like a pretty responsible move on their behalf. Surely some tourists will still bring their own sunscreen but it's a step toward preserving their natural environment.

I'm for taking any reasonable measure to protect the environment.

Protecting coral reefs > folks laying around tanning like it's their job.

There are suitable alternatives or heck, just put on a shirt or sit in the shade... :wink05:

Doesn't seem unreasonable to me.

LOL to me the sun exposure is a collateral thing. Never got the taste for laying in the sand like a sea lion.

Not banning sunscreen, banning certain chemicals that damage the reef and fish. Misleading title is misleading. And if anyone is using sunscreen while trying to get a tan, good luck.

The cynical me wonders if the law's authors (perhaps) hold interests in a company that makes or distributes a sunscreen that doesn't use these chemicals?

Most tourists that sprawl over those beaches need to keep clothes on anyways.

I would think not. Almost everywhere we went a few weeks back had free sunscreen dispensers. They do know if the reefs are destroyed the tourism goes to shit. So there is some financial incentive there.

Which sunscreens are still allowed? Do they actually work, or are they missing a couple required chemicals in order to be effective?

I think they work better. We use a mineral sunscreen by neutrogina. Cool factors are, you can get wet right after you put it on, it feels like it says on longer.

Hawaii has know this has been coming for many years. Lots of companies have been developing natural lines because of this. Now that it’s law, the prices should come down a bit when supply meets demand.
