I'm all for team sports but when asked if I wanted to climb 3 miles into a cave that regularly filled with water, think I would have to say 'no thanks coach, I'll work on my homework'

Thai officials ruled out any immediate attempts to evacuate 12 football players and their coach trapped deep inside a system of caves in northern Thailand on Saturday despite concerns over low oxygen levels underground and poor weather forecasts.
"No, not today," Narongsak Osottanakorn, the governor of Chiang Rai province, said after being pressed by reporters on rescue efforts.
Officials are considering a rescue plan involving a "buddy dive" -- where an experienced adult diver would swim with each boy -- to evacuate the team members, according to a US official familiar with the joint rescue operation.
Thai divers would lead the mission and US divers would preposition oxygen tanks, the US official said. The rescue team also includes divers and workers from Australia, the United Kingdom, and other parts of Europe and Asia.

A former Thai special forces member, who volunteered to take them air tanks, died, when he failed to leave enough air for himself to escape.. :/

When I heard about it I figured 100 yards, just poke your head inside and see what's up. Oh, they went 5km inside? hahahaha

4 boys rescued so far, took 2 divers per boy 7 hours to get them out. Going back for more soon.
They should leave the coach in there for coming up with this stupid idea.

Elon Musk sure is unhappy that the Thai government dismissed his plan to send a "kid sized" submarine into the cave. Called one of the rescuers, Vern Unsworth, an expat Brit living in Thailand and an expert cave diver, "pedo guy" in a now-deleted Twitter rant. :facepalm2:

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/worl ... 48366.html

Given that the boys were given anti-anxiety medication by a Thai Navy Seal physician--who was, incidentally, the last to leave the cave--and were apparently carried on litters through much of the cave, I'm guessing that even if Mr. Musk's invention had been practical, it still wouldn't have been as safe as the actual rescue plan that actually rescued the boys and their coach. Even light conscious sedation, in the pediatric setting, requires medical monitoring.

Elon Musk owes that particular diver and by extension, all of the divers and the thousands of first responders and volunteers who mobilised to support the dive team, an apology.
