Knots. Paracord. Braid. Weave. Help!

Mon Jul 09, 2018 10:58 am

Gang. I’ve been working a project and have come to a point of needing help.

What I want to do is braid these ends together to make a close loop. Does anyone have some guidance to offer?

I want to tie the six on the left together and the six on the right together without a bulbous area where they connect.

I cannot offer the skills/advice to do what your asking, but from seeing other kinds of loops used many times, it seems they usually use one line (not a additional chunk like in your pic) and loop it and braid it back into itself.

If possible to do it how you have pictured it would seem to me that the load would be split from four strands to only two on each side of the loop.

If one line is looped and braided back in then you are connecting four strands to four strands. More strength and friction to bind the braid.

What he said. Look up a four part sennet. I can look it up in my ABOK when I get home.

Never mind.
I was thinking about a different strand configuration.
I used to do a lot of back splices, eye splices, and short splice.
Both in the Navy and for private boats.
I'm sure there are oodles of videos on youtube.

This channel on youtube is all about paracord. There are plenty of links to other knot tyers there. You might send a not to him/her/them and see what they might offer. There is also a book of knots linked there

Look at knot 2776 in the ABOK, page 454.

Caution, you're about to find out more about knotting than you may ever have wanted. I've been referring to my hard copy since my 16th birthday when my parents gave it to me.

Yeah...the irony. The few real braids you see in my hair were made by a woman five years ago while we sat at a bar in New Orleans. I don’t know what her secret is and I wish that I did. I’ve not done anything to them and they just remain in place.

Brad I think you’re right. Based on the book from David, thanks for link. It’s starting to make sense now

It ain’t pretty and it needs perfecting. It’s still stronger than all the previous attempts I’ve made.

Does it need to be pretty and strong, or just strong? You could always do some double sheet bends... that would be strong, but it wouldn't be pretty.

A poem that has gotten me through many climbing and boating trips:

If you don't know a knot, tie a lot.

Right over left, left over right.

"Here is the rule. The rabbit comes out of the hole, goes around the tree, and then goes back into the hole. What is it for?"
